U.S. Rep. Xavier Becerra has been the force behind the museum's creation.
Should Congress create a National Museum of the American Latino?
Should there be a National Museum of the American Latino? Four years ago, a museum celebrating the history and culture of Native Americans opened at the east end of the National Mall. Within a decade, one honoring the contributions of African Americans will be erected on the west end, near the Washington Monument. Yet Latinos, the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority, have no museum of their own in the nation's capital.
But the National Museum of the American Latino came one step closer to reality last week when the House approved legislation that includes creation of a commission to study the feasibility of building such a facility.
Should Congress create a museum to honor Latinos? Or are such institutions racially divisive?

Latino???
Submitted on May 13th, 2008 by sleekoLet's start by trying to define "Latino".
Is it someone that has black hair, brown skin and speaks Spanish? Lots of non-Latino Americans fit this description.
Is it someone with familial "roots" in Latin America? Which Latin America? The one prior to 1848 or the present one? My family has been in Cal. since around 1810. Does that make my blond haired, blue eyed, non-Spanish speaking ass, with a German last name a Latino?
Is it someone that "embraces" the Latino culture? Hell, I'll take some lessons then, learn some dances, get a fat guitar.
In my book, "Latino" appears to be more a choice, than anything. There is no Latino genome. No special DNA, either.
If I choose, I'm as "Latino", as Fabian Nunez. He's not from any Latin America country, either. He's just another "American".
If there is to be a "Latino" museum, it better be open to pretty much anyone. There's more to a cultural identity than the arrangement of the letters, in ones last name.
not to seem sarcastic
Submitted on May 6th, 2008 by John 2000but congress should declare itself to be a museum and charge admission. The members should be gutted, stuffed, and placed in vacuum cases.
They already have a facility and so no startup costs are required.
Museum?

Separate is NEVER equal
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by ReneeIf society wishes to truly eradicate prejudice based on ethnicity, gender, race, etc. we must stop classifying one another. We ought to celebrate greatness, no matter who it is generated by and not be so concerned about that person's ethnicity/gender/race.
Latino museum
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by Anonymous**YOU** need to get a life!
Racist white people Have never given credit to others when due and well earned.
for example:
Hispanics and specifically Mexican-Americans (not Mexicans) have earned MORE CONGRESSIONAL MEDALS OF HONOR for actions in the battlefield.
than ALL other ethnicities! (Anglos ethnic group included) (per Capita)
Those are verifiable Military Statistics that ANYONE can look up!
However, whites have forever tried to suppress the word getting out about contributions to US society by ANY "minority" group.
So, it's up to a particular group to make sure that the county, society and THE WORLD know the truth and the facts!!
for example: The L.A. Times newspaper NEVER, ever, gave credit to Hispanics on Memorial day for contributions and actions in the Military for the Defense of our country. Until 2004 (or 2003) BUT IT TOOK A LATINO REPORTER to make sure the facts got out and world to learn that fact. (L.A. circulates worldwide via print and the WEBSITE)
so, YES! an "American Latino Museum" is in order
--US Citizen of Latino ancestry. (and Scientist that has cotributed to the advancement of Medical, life-saving, technology)
Museum......LOL
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by sleekoJust look at the sponsors last name. He probably thinks he's a Mexican, even though he was born and raised in the USA.
Note to the file: "Mexican" is not a race.
It's a nationally. A legal title bestowed upon citizens of Mexico, by the Mexican government.

Should their be a latino museum ?
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by AnonymousNo, why should their be a museum dedicated to Latinos'?Unless you consider Latino as a dead language and or race.
American Latino Museum
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by AnonymousNo, This is America! I'm tired of all the foreigners coming here to America. They receive more aid than any American ever hoped. This is a nightmare, the American people pay taxes, and when things go wrong for a working american family, such as illness, loss of income etc., we get no help! No medical, not food stamps, no help at all. However, if you are a foreigner you reep all the benefits the American people paid for!!!!!!! Yes this is America home of the Free, Yes if you are new to America. We help most every country, except our own. We allow our own people to starve, do without medical care, live on the streets, yet we send our hard earned money overseas! Including our jobs!! When is the government of America going to see, to help others, you must be able to help yourself first. Help starts at home, not abroad!!!!!!!!! I believe most american people would agree with me!! I'm tired of our money that we work hard for, being used to support other nations, except our own!! Wake up people!!! Save our people, save our jobs, and save our homes, and now our food!!!!! So no I do not believe we need to have a museum for Latino's, Lets have one for the everyday American people, if we have that kind of money.
a commission to study the feasibility of building such a facilit
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by John 2000The idea has been seriously floating around for at least 5 years now. So now, of course, is the moment to vote on "a commission to study the feasibility of building such a facility"!
It makes the pandering and posturing over the gasoline tax 'debate' look like a bug in a rug.
Happy Cinco de Mayo! Really.
