Al-Qaeda is an international group of Islamic militant extremists. Al-Qaeda has attacked civilian and military targets in many countries, the most well known being the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. These actions were followed by the U.S. government launching a campaign against al-Qaeda called the "War on Terror". Al-Qaeda's objectives include the end of foreign influence in Muslim countries and the creation of a new Islamic kingdom.
