but if you visit where I live, you wouldn't make those kind of claims.
BTW I've read extensively in American History and your argument is flawed. Just because Mexicans, Italians, Irish, are not acknowledged by nationality or whatever people group, does not mean their sacrifices were any less important than anyone elses.
I have grown up with people 1,2,3 generations removed from Mexico. Many cousins, nieces, nephews, lifelong friends have a hispanic surname, slightly darker skin than me (Native American) or have Grandparents in Mexico. I simply don't believe in race. We are all of one blood and in this together.
Your right, this knowledge can be obtained through college under 'Chicano history'. This, of course, is an optional course.
One commentor on this poll said, "why make a museum under 'Latino' anyway, why not just say 'American'. Well, becuase Latinos are not included in American history...are they. High school history has nothing on Hispanics, Blacks or Asian American history, only White...why? Are the only 'true' Americans White? Should only Whites be acknowledged for their contributions and sacrifices, defying all others?
Hispanic history month is a joke and an insult. The joke part is becuase it doesn't teach anyone crap about our culture's history in the U.S., and an insult becuase instead of our history being linked into the whole of the American history we are segregated into one month. Nevermind the fact that segregation played no part in the killing fields of our country's wars...only in education, recreation, commerce...you know the bare necessities.
America believes it is out of the age of segregation based on race, not so, we are still up to our eyeballs in it. Our country's history is completely segregated, with Whites on one side, (the most visible and most appreciated), Blacks and Hispanics elswhere. Kind of like our towns and cities.
GIVE US OUR DAMN MUSEUM!!! God knows we've earned it, in blood!
I cannot believe that Americans do not want Congress to create a National Museum for American Latinos! Man it's one thing to flat out ignore our contributions and sacrifices and it's another to DENY any recognition! I am fabbergasted at the results of this poll. I really didn't think that Americans would dissaprove of such a thing.
But hey, let's get real, what's new? All of my Latino life, as an American, I've lay witness to this spit down upon attitude that stinks to high hell. Personally I am disgusted at the polls results. Before you vote on this issue I just want you to know a little of what you are denying.
Wars Mexico has been an ally in:
American Civil War---Cinco de Mayo
WW1------------------Zimmerman Telegram 1917
WW2------------------Escuadron 201 (Aztec Eagles)
How many American Latinos have served to defend OUR freedoms:
SECOND, numerically, to Whites---American Latinos!!
Second to NONE in military decorations---American Latinos!!
43 Medal of Honor recipients for all of America's wars, 12 in WW2 alone! Jerk.
Give us our damn museum@!
Although I was conferred citizenship at birth, moving to the US as an adult from PR felt like the path of an immigrant. The vast difference in culture required the need to adapt and overcome.
Yet, as one who viewed the US as a land of great promise and opportunity, I did just that. I vastly improved my English and ensured that I would function as an American here. Not as a Puerto Rican-American, because I didn't feel the need to label myself. I didn't feel the need to differentiate myself from others when it was plainly visible that Americans are all different from each other. That's the greatness of our nation. That we can attempt to overlook differences to work together for a common goal. It is nowhere near perfect but that discussion is for another time.
It is one thing to celebrate the diversity of each individual group, it is quite another to build monuments to separate us.
If there is to be a museum to celebrate the lives of great Hispanics in this country, let a non-profit build it with donated funds. But to allocate resources better equipped to fund much-needed infrastructure expenditures would be wasteful at best.
Congress needs to stay out of the Museum business and focus on spending our money wisely ;like establishing military bases where they don't belong, building roads to nowhere and giving away tax money so millionaires can help us burn our food.

Latino Museum
Submitted on May 6th, 2008 by AnonymousWhy?
When is everyone just going to say we are all "Americans" and put up an "American Museum"?
Museum business

You know, common sense stuff.
What?
Submitted on May 6th, 2008 by CashMoneyWhy would we create a national museum for the American Latino? It doesn't make sence.
