Hannah Poling's family has received a settlement from the government.
Some of our major presidential candidates have sounded recently like they think they're scientists. Specifically, Barack Obama and John McCain -- allies on few topics -- have both asserted a link between autism rates -- an 805 percent increase between 1992 and 2003 -- and vaccines containing mercury. The Washington Post Fact Checker quotes both men:
"We've seen just a skyrocketing autism rate. Some people are suspicious that it's connected to the vaccines. This person included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it." -- Barack Obama, Pennsylvania rally, April 21, 2008.
"It's indisputable that (autism) is on the rise among children, the question is what's causing it. And we go back and forth and there's strong evidence that indicates it's got to do with a preservative in vaccines." --John McCain, Texas town hall meeting, February 29, 2008.
The debate over the alleged link between autism rates and mercury-bearing vaccines was further inflamed in March, when it was revealed that the family of Hannah Poling, a 9-year-old autistic girl, was compensated by the Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Vaccine Injury Compensation. The details of the payoff were not revealed, but it seemed to be a concession by the federal government in the long-running controversy.
And, of course, there was the autism storyline in the opening episode of the ABC series "Eli Stone."
So is there a link between vaccines and autism? Multiple studies -- from the Centers for Disease Control, American Academy of Pediatrics, Institute of Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine -- have found no such link.
First, some background. Why is there mercury in vaccines in the first place? According to the CDC, it was an ingredient in the the chemical thimerosal, which was used starting in the 1930s to give vaccines a longer shelf life before use. But as the controversy over thimerosal has intensified, its use has dropped:
Since 2001, with the exception of some influenza (flu) vaccines, thimerosal is not used as a preservative in routinely recommended childhood vaccines.
But a January study in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry noted that, despite the reduced use of thimerosal, autism cases in California had continued to climb during the 21st century, indicating some other cause for the rise.
The DDS data do not show any recent decrease in autism in California despite the exclusion of more than trace levels of thimerosal from nearly all childhood vaccines. The DDS data do not support the hypothesis that exposure to thimerosal during childhood is a primary cause of autism.
The new study confirmed what other researchers have found over the years:
* In Quebec, where thimerosal was discontinued in 1996, autism rates have also continued to rise, according to 2006 study of 28,000 children:
"There is no relationship between the level of exposure to MMR vaccines and thimerosal-containing vaccines and rates of autism," says Dr. Eric Fombonne, Director of Pediatric Psychiatry at the Montreal Children's Hospital of the MUHC and lead investigator of the new study. Thimerosal was used to prevent bacterial and fungal contamination in the manufacture of various vaccines until its elimination from vaccine formulas in 1996 in Quebec. "According to our data, the incidence of autism was higher in children who were vaccinated after thimerosal was eliminated from vaccines," says Dr. Fombonne.
* The Institute of Medicine examined the body of research in 2004 and rejected links between autism and the vaccines:
The committee concludes that the body of epidemiological evidence favors rejection of a causal relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism. The committee also concludes that the body of epidemiological evidence favors rejection of a causal relationship between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism.
* And in 2002, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study examining autism rates of all children born in Denmark from January 1991 through December 1998. The results:
This study provides three strong arguments against a causal relation between MMR vaccination and autism. First, the risk of autism was similar in vaccinated and unvaccinated children, in both age-adjusted and fully adjusted analyses. Second, there was no temporal clustering of cases of autism at any time after immunization. Third, neither autistic disorder nor other autistic-spectrum disorders were associated with MMR vaccination.
The findings have been consistent. Yet the vaccine-autism connection persists, for parents and politicians. Why? Probably because influential people and organizations continue to make the case for the link. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote in support of the connection in a famous -- and widely debunked -- 2003 Rolling Stone article. The National Autism Association also suggests a link by citing similarities between autism and mercury poisoning, and by pointing out previous government failures to properly respond to health threats -- but cites the greatly criticized work of Mark Geier as proof of such a link.
So: Autism is caused by mercury-bearing vaccines. Truth or not?

Half half on answer
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by AnonymousI highly doubt that mercury is responsible for skyrocketing levels of autism, YET, I do believe mercury is a dangerous metal which should NEVER be put into your body even in trace amounts, as for any toxic substance, just because there is not enough of the substance in you to kill you or have noticable damage does not mean it isn't harming you. I am sure the mercury in vaccines could be responsible for several different things such as "ADHD" being overdiagnosed and some brain damage.
you need more than "truth or not"
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by Anonymousyou need a "could be"...you present an excellent case of only presenting one side of a story...something I didn't think was supposed to happen on this site...certainly, the people that believe there is a connection have some data they could have supplied for your article...shame on redblueamerica.com
Autism
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by AnonymousI am a parent of a 15 year old autistic child. I remember spending a 3 week vacation with my 5 year old and not seeing a single symptom of anything. We returned from this summer vacation, and my son then received his vacinations to attend school. He was never the same I saw strange behaviors immediately after. From day one the teachers said something is wrong. After many dead ends with miracle cures (gluten free diets etc) we tried chelating agents under a doctor's care thinking we might see excess mercury. We didn't, we did find very high levels of arsenic. This pointed to Chromated copper arsenate used in pressure treated wood. We had a pressure treated swing set and he played at parks with pressure treated lumber. My guess is that mercury in vaccines may be the tippng point to excess heavy metal exposure in small children from various sources.
"proving?"
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by AnonymousIt's also not fair to obsess on etiologies that appear unlikely. I respect Senator's McCain and Obama a great deal, but neither is a scientist. It is necessary to be selective about what hypotheses we investigate because time and money are limited, especially in an age where government is not too friendly to science. If you want more possibilities investigated more seriously, invest in science!
Autism
Submitted on May 5th, 2008 by AnonymousCorrelation does not mean causality. Children tend to be diagnosed with autism at that age anyway, with or without vaccinations.
I voted Not ...
Submitted on May 4th, 2008 by John 2000but not so much because I really know much about the topic. There really could be some sort of a link.
But, I would suspect that the cause(s) lie elsewhere.
For example: linkage to increase in micro-wave (EMF) bombardment.
But, can you imagine the conflicts of interest this possibility would introduce? The amount of investment?
many causes, one disease
Submitted on May 3rd, 2008 by Anonymousautism is a broad term for a group of developmental disorders which likely has many different causes.... and poisoning is the most obvious. although no 'scientific' studies support this, empirical evidence does.
various poisons do cause symptoms very similar to a few forms of autism. these symptoms develop in young people, who, being small and weak, are obviously most vulnerable to toxins. poisons are also extremely prevalent in our modern environment.
we don't know what the cause is, but its not fair to discount environmental possibilities just because a scientist has not YET 'proven' it to you... the fact of the matter is that whatever the cause ends up being--genetic, drug related, etc..., it WILL be related to environmental factors and very likely poisons themselves...the rise of industrialism AND pharmaceuticals matches the trend of autism too closely!
No Sure facts are correct
Submitted on May 2nd, 2008 by PabloIt currently understood that autism is caused by some effect while in womb and this effect caused a developmental change in the brain and nervous system.
There currently is not study or proof or even current theory about autism happening to a child after they are born.
Its just a matter when the autism become definable and to what level the autism is effecting the child.
Some types of autism become more progressive the older the child gets.
Thus what appeared as a normal baby changes months to no more than a year or two when the symptoms become extremely noticable.
Thus currently, autism is caused by something. Wether or not that something is genetic, or environmental or some drug interaction during the pregnacy and the list is very long.
There just is no known cause for autism. Its one of those items that may be genetic and may actually be caused by something environmental.
I would be more worried about the levels of Teflon and how that could cause health problems since Teflon acts simularly like any common carcinegen and builds up over time.
autism vaccines
Submitted on May 1st, 2008 by Anonymousthis should be the choice by the parents or parent of the child, heck we were told about mercruy in fish water and other places by all means let the choice fall with the person recieving the shot and if there to young to make the choice the guardian of the child should be allowed to make that choice, stop taking away our freedom of choice
Because that is the age
Submitted on May 1st, 2008 by AnonymousBecause that is the age where autism tends to get diagnosed. How could it have changed overnight? Maybe it didn't. The studies all indicate that there is no link to mercury. The person who initially started the rumor has retracted some of his initial statements, not to mention that the children in his tests were chosen at least partially based on their having autism.. which makes the study that started all this furor faulty.
People always want to find something to blame for tragedies, but the evidence indicates that mercury is not at fault here.
Re: Autism
Submitted on May 1st, 2008 by AnonymousI don't think mercury in vaccines causes autism, but it might trigger it. Some people might be prone to autism or something and react to mercury differently than the "normal child".
RE== Robert Kennedy Jr is
Submitted on May 1st, 2008 by janmbRE== Robert Kennedy Jr is the champion of environmental causes ---not McCain or Obama and HILLARY CLINTON quickly countered with three children of Robert Kennedy -- Robert Jr., Kerry and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
I personally see this as no one REALLY knows what causes Austism because sometimes --some children appear normal til they age a few years. Perhaps, its genetic damage that occurred to the parents handed down to the children.
It seems to be a difficult thing to diagnose.
Until someone knows for SURE --let's not be second guessing this and that cause that breds only trouble.
autism
Submitted on May 1st, 2008 by AnonymousMy thoughts are vaccines are not the culprit but something else that most toddlers are given during that time. It could be fluids, cereals, something ingested. It could be from chewed on toys that were made outside the US. A lot of children are fed jarred baby food. It could be contaminates from plastic bottles. Most of my daughter's baby bottles were made over seas. We threw away all of those and got glass bottles. We do not use the microwave for any of the kids' food or drink.
AUTISM
Submitted on May 1st, 2008 by AnonymousA FRINED OF MINE @ WORK HAS A GRANDSON, HE WILL BE 3 YEARS OLD SOON. HE WAS JUST FINE UNTIL AROUND 18 MONTHS OLD & GOT HIS SHOTS & EVERYTHING CHANGED. PRIOR TO THAT TIME, HE WOULD SING SONGS, DANCE, WAS TALKING, ALERT & HAPPY. NOW HE DOES NONE OF THESE THINGS & GET VERY FRUSTRATED W/THE MOST SIMPLE TASKS. HE NO LONGER COMMUNICATES & IS REALLY QUIET EXCEPT FOR GRUNTING & SMALL SOUNDS. HE HAS HAD MANY TESTS RUN & THE ONLY ANSWERS THAT KEEP COMING UP IS AUTISM. HOW COULD THIS HAVE ALL CHANGED ALOMST OVERNIGHT????
