Does the death penalty make us safe?

It's too bad justice usin't swift. It takes months to complete a jury murder trial and in most instances the family and friends of the deceased have to go through the morbid details over and over again.I am suggesting that after a reasonable court trial and if the verdict is unananimious the suspected murderer should be let go or executed within 48 hrs.
