Because that is the age where autism tends to get diagnosed. How could it have changed overnight? Maybe it didn't. The studies all indicate that there is no link to mercury. The person who initially started the rumor has retracted some of his initial statements, not to mention that the children in his tests were chosen at least partially based on their having autism.. which makes the study that started all this furor faulty.
People always want to find something to blame for tragedies, but the evidence indicates that mercury is not at fault here.
