... that the Blackwater folks have largely operated outside the command and control of the U.S. military, and outside any real system of accountability. That has freed them up to do things -- like, whoops, indiscriminately kill Iraqi civilians -- that create more opponents than we already had. It's not just a generalized opposition to mercenaries (though there's certainly some of that) but to the very specific harm that Blackwater has done to our cause abroad.
