When is Audacity the Better Part of Caution?

I think Bill Kristol knows. In his New York Times column today, he argues that McCain needs to demonstrate the kind of caution that requires audacity--not only in his veep choice, but also in the full on operation of his campaign. Kristol’s reflection comes from his talks with McCain staffers and, if his representations are--in fact--representative, it sounds like they know what they’re about.

Polygamy and Liberty

Some years ago, Al Gore made an incredible gaffe that--in addition to being painfully stupid--was also telling. He declared that our motto "E Pluribus Unum" means "out of one, many" when, in fact, it means just the opposite. Of course, his "translation" more aptly captures the essence of contemporary liberalism, which, it now seems redundant to qualify with the adjective "radical." Out of one, many . . .

We're Close to a Depression Like a Breeze is Close to a Hurricane

Amity Shlaes wants to give the country a collective slap in its hysterical face.  Good for her.  She makes the very reasonable case for stepping back and looking at some simple factual comparisons between our economic "woes" and those of previous generations.  The comparison between today and the Great Depression is just too ridiculous to elaborate.  But how about the comparison between today and, say, the 1970s.  Here again, there's no

An Elitist Victim

In a letter addressed to potential donors for Barack Obama’s campaign for President, campaign manager David Plouffe, takes advantage of the recent verbal flop of his candidate. Plouffe asks donors to consider that the real "elitists" are Clinton and McCain because their dollar support is coming from PACs and special interests whereas Obama’s funding is coming from the little people . . . in increments as little as $5.

Obama Thinks We're All Stupid

If you didn't already have this opinion before Obama's remarks confirming it in Pennsylvania, then surely his defense of these remarks--in and of itself--is even more evidence.  Obama's opponents should not belabor this point by attempting to explain it, but they should certainly remind us of his remarks as often as a camera or a microphone comes their way.  If they feel compelled to explain it, they should be careful--lest they appear to share Senator Obama's disdain

Zero Tolerance for Common Sense

Mark Steyn recounts a parade of recent horrors afflicting children in American schools and, even worse,  pre-schools.  These outrages stem from policies of "zero tolerance" and from their application by over-zealous, bureaucratic, and common sense impaired teachers and administrators.  The sad irony is that, undoubtedly,  these zero-tolerance policies were conceived as a means of inducing lazy, bureaucratic, and common sense impared teac

The High Cost of Raising Baby

Pamela Paul is a genius, as far as I’m concerned. Her article in today’s Washington Post takes on the two most common negative assertions people make today regarding people who have more than two children. Today it is assumed that parents of large broods are either a) irresponsible or b) showing off.

Of Bromances and Navel Gazing Bromides

It is so typical of today's navel-gazing popular culture to imagine that every observable phenomenon is of our own creation.  We don't look to the past.  Heaven forbid, we look to the nature of things.  And when we take "credit" for having invented a thing, we have to give it some nasty little spin full of psychological and sexual drama.  Take, for example, this story from the Seattle Times about so-called "Bromances."  Bromances, the auth

Co-ed dorms are so, like, 1990s . . .

Perhaps I should not have been surprised by the article I cited earlier this week about "Virginity Clubs" and virginity activism sprouting up on campus. This news proves that there is very little of the other kind of activism left to explore. It seems co-ed dorms are not enough . . . now what we need are co-ed rooms.

Parental Guidance is Suggested

Today’s New York Times has a long article that probes into the inner workings of the so-called "Virginity Clubs" now springing up on college campuses--particularly among the Ivy set.
