Conservatives take German Election: Social Democrats Bounced

Angela Merkel, German Chancellor and leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has won enough votes in a German election "Bundestagswahl" to form a centre-right government along with business oriented Free Democrats (FDP). This is her second win, but in 2005 CDU had to rule with the Social Democrats as their 'partners'. The work will by no means be easy since Germany has been in a pretty deep recession, and the three minority parties can surely be a pain in the arse, but it is at least hopeful. It will be interesting to observe the British elections next Spring to see if they follow suit, as they are somewhat expected to.

Looking ahead to Fall 2010 elections, Rasmussen shows some interesting numbers, in addition to the fact that Obama is back down to -10 today. Let's hope we get to those elections in one piece.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of voters believe Congress is too liberal while 22% hold the opposite view and say it is too conservative. Only 14% say the ideological balance of Congress is about right.

Forty-two percent (42%) say a group of people randomly selected from the phone book would do a better job than the current Congress, but the same number (42%) disagree.

Two-out-of-three American voters (67%) also lack confidence that Congress knows what it’s doing when it comes to the economy.

Anyway, congratulations Angela!
