Texas Gov. Rick Perry Backs Abortion-Ultrasound BIll in State Address
Posted 1 year 27 weeks ago by
Austin, TX (LifeNews.com) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry urged lawmakers in the state legislature to adopt a bill that would allow women to see an ultrasound of their unborn child prior to having an abortion. The bill made traction before in the legislature and pro-life advocates hope to get it to Perry's desk this time for him to sign.Perry called the bill “another layer of protection for the most vulnerable Texans.“Issues of this complexity and moral weight are the sort of thing that we are sent here to address,” he said.
Sen. Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican, and Rep. Frank Corte Jr., a San Antonio Republican, are the main legislators sponsoring the bill. In 2007, the state Senate approved the bill and it stalled in the House.Patrick told reporters after Perry's address that his support is “music to these conservative ears.”
Lesley Ramsey, director of the Texas Association of Planned Parenthood Affiliates, told the media that her group opposes the bill and claimed that letting women see an ultrasound of their baby jeopardizes their health.
She also claimed Perry is only supporting the bill to help him in an expected Republican primary against Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, even though he has been a longtime pro-life advocate.Ramsey said the proposal “does not have the woman’s health or best interests in mind.”“This legislation is a political tactic aimed at appeasing the governor’s primary base,” Ramsey said.
The governor also talked about promoting adult stem cell research as a more ethical and effective alternative to the use of embryonic stem cells, which are obtained by destroying human life.
"Expertise in this emerging and increasingly promising field will not only bring healing to the suffering and create jobs for Texans, it will also establish an appropriate firewall protecting the unborn from exploitation," Perry said.
Joe Pojman, executive director of Texas Alliance for Life, was in attendance for the speech and his group has been working with Perry and supporting Choose Life" specialty license plates.

A human beings who is unable to defend it self. A being of heart, love, compassion and intelligences, a being who should have as much protection under the law as the female of the species.

Not True
Submitted on February 26th, 2009 by ajamoI give a damn what a woman does with her baby while she is carrying it, that her business not mine.
All I said before it's up to her and her doctor, and at the end God is supposed to be the judge.
This has
Submitted on February 26th, 2009 by Skye RiversNOTHING to do with not wanting your opinions... it is just that Ham and you both feel abortion is murder..... and if a women gets pregnant in your opinon she should keep the baby regardless.... compassion goes a long way is all......

I agree with untalkable on this one. Perry is advocating a bill that's seems inconsistent with his previous philosophy.
Also, in Texas, Governors are more ceremonial and the Lt Governor has the power. Democrat Bob Bullock did a fantastic job during Bush's governship. It's arguable Bush would not have been a successful governor or even President if not for Bullock. I know, off topic.
Remember
Submitted on February 26th, 2009 by un-talkable subjectsThis Bill is coming from Mr. "Government is too big already" - But he really means it's to big when I disagree with a law and not restrictive enough when I say so.
Perry was hand-picked by GWB when he left for Washington to complete his term. And has stayed cause Bush paid for him to be there.
In Texas you can by anything.. especially our politicians.
UNTIL both you MEN
Submitted on February 26th, 2009 by Skye RiversHave a vagina, please have a little compassion on this matter....... may I remind you that it does takes two to tango...... and the bottom line is this.. since it's the woman who gets pregnant, then she should be the one who takes care of her own body... if she is not responsible enough to get pregnant due to a moment of unleashed passion, then she is the one who needs to decide what is right for her own body... obviously, women who use abortion as a form of birth control are completely ignorant! COMPLETELY!........ is it murder... yes... maybe women should consider this before lying down and giving it up...... maybe by seeing the ultra sound, or knowing that this is going to be something that will be enforced upon women, then women will be the responsible ones to say to the man, NO...
If this seems barbaric I am truly sorry.. but this does piss me off on both counts... the fact that the government is stepping in now before attaining an abortion bringing attention to what one would truly be doing, and also, that this can completely be side tracked if people were more responsible... from that octuplet mom moran to the people in third world countries...

Submitted on February 26th, 2009 by ajamoYour are right pass a law no more sex between man and woman until married. Then have sex if you really mean business.
Want sex before marrage, man and man have your sex together, until you marry
women same thing.
when you marry it will then be between the sexes.
What the heck,
Submitted on February 26th, 2009 by Hamiltonjust ban child bith altogether. Kill them all; that will solve all the problems and make the jan's of the world happy. Abortion is not about womens rights its about murder.

Submitted on February 25th, 2009 by ajamoThese type of people want to take the rights of women away.
Thank God this is the United States or they would have all women doing the dirty work, you know like the Indians did the women.
Your right Doctors, Insurance people and bankers are running our country.
Unnecessary regulation
Submitted on February 25th, 2009 by rom12921Available on request - sure, but requiring (and state paying for) seems awfully heavy-handed. I strongly oppose the bill.
Why would this confuse anyone? Wouldn't women want all the information available before making such a decision? Emotionally difficult to end a life with or without the ultrasound.
How many is too many children/people for the world?
My feelings are this..
Submitted on February 25th, 2009 by Skye RiversI don't agree with this and I can't wait for Jan's comments... to me, we have way too many children in this world, and this will only make it worse and confusing for young women dealing with this very sensitive issue.
Also, who pays for the ultra sound? Is this another way for doctors to make more money? A woman who was interviewed on a news channel, who is backing this bill (sorry I don't know her name) states that ultrasounds are done when kidneys, and other items are removed from the body and having an abortion should not be any different.
Well darlin, my thoughts on this is how many women forced to have an ultra sound before having an abortion will emotionally be scared. I understand the pros and cons as we all have discussed this, but seriously, do you feel this is a right thing for any state to enforce? How do you feel this will play out for all the young women seeing this ultrasound and their babies that they will be aborting?
