Doesn't Anybody Care That Obama is a Racist?

Obama has been a member of a racist church for 20 years, the Trinity United Church of Christ. During that time the church was led by Jeremiah Wright. Obama has called Wright his “spiritual mentor” and by Obama's own account, Wright is the inspiration for his memoir, The Audacity of Hope — the title is borrowed from a Wright sermon of the same title. Obama credits Wright for bringing him to Christ and for baptizing his children. The theme of Wright’s theology is summarized in Trinity Church's mission statement:

“We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian… Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain ‘true to our native land,’ the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”

Imagine the scorn that would be heaped (deservedly so) upon a white church with a mission statement that read, We are a congregation which is Unashamedly White...” In a recent interview on the Fox News Channel, Wright explained that black liberation theology is based on the teachings of Dr. James Cone, among others. Who is Dr. Cone and what does he espouse? In his most influential work, Black Theology and Black Power, Dr. Cone explained black liberation theology as follows:

“Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community.... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy.”

Is is fair to paint Obama with this racist brush? Hasn't he repudiated Wright? Well, he did repudiate some of the more extreme statements of Wright, such as “God damn America,” and the claim that the U.S. Government created AIDS in order to kill black people. But he did so only after these embarrassing statements came to light and threatened to harm his candidacy. The fact is that Barack Obama has been for 20 years, up until very recently, a member of a racist organization. Who could imagine that a recent 20 year member of the Ku Klux Klan could be a serious candidate for President of the United States.
