Topic of the Day: The Surge Purge
Posted 7 weeks 4 days ago bySince it is no longer necessary to explicitely name the presumtive nominee whose website not so long ago was grown to have a page dedicated to 'rumor control', I need only say that there exists a function there even more dedicated to 'fact control' or 'historical revisionism'. Of course, this has gone on for a long time at that site, and one does wonder why the operatives there were so SLOW to cleanse the inhouse record of prior statements regarding the troop surge in Iraq.
I found a good blog that contains the entire? sequence of this presumptive nominee regarding the Surge going back to 2006. Unfortunately, the blog I reference below has probably ruined the suspense of the matter by including the name of a certain presumptive nominee, but I offer it anyway for the pure sake of history.
Apparently, all such references in the site in question were removed over the past weekend under the smoke of 'child interviews', and 'black actor outrageous comments' in the days before 'The Purging' and the New Yorker flap immediately after the weekend. So, without further unspecific bias: please read and consider:

Obama: "Given the deteriorating situation, it is clear at this point that we cannot, through putting in more troops or maintaining the presence that we have, expect that somehow the situation is going to improve, and we have to do something significant to break the pattern that we've been in right now." (NBC's "Meet The Press," 10/22/06)
January 2007: Barack Obama Says The Surge Would Actually Worsen Sectarian Violence In Iraq. Obama: "I am not persuaded that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq is going to solve the sectarian violence there. In fact, I think it will do the reverse." (MSNBC's "Response To The President's Speech On Iraq," 1/10/07)
January 2007: Barack Obama Says He Did Not Know Of Any Middle East Expert Or Military Officer That Believed That The New Strategy Would "Make A Substantial Difference On The Situation On The Ground." Obama: "We cannot impose a military solution on what has effectively become a civil war. And until we acknowledge that reality -- we can send 15,000 more troops, 20,000 more troops, 30,000 more troops, I don't know any expert on the region or any military officer that I've spoken to privately that believes that that is going to make a substantial difference on the situation on the ground." (CBS' "Face The Nation," 1/14/07)
March 2007: Barack Obama Warns The Troop Surge Would Not Make A Long-Term Difference. Obama: "[E]ven those who are supporting -- but here's the thing, Larry -- even those who support the escalation have acknowledged that 20,000, 30,000, even 40,000 more troops placed temporarily in places like Baghdad are not going to make a long-term difference." (CNN's "Larry King Live," 3/19/07)
May 2007: Barack Obama Says He Does Not Believe The Surge Is Working. Obama: "And what I know is that what our troops deserve is not just rhetoric, they deserve a new plan. Governor Romney and Senator McCain clearly believe that the course that we're on in Iraq is working, I do not." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks To The Coalition Of Black Trade Unionists Convention, Chicago, IL, 5/25/07)
July 2007: Barack Obama Says The Surge Had Not Worked In Iraq. Obama: "My assessment is that the surge has not worked and we will not see a different report eight weeks from now." (NBC's "The Today Show," 7/18/07)
September 2007: Barack Obama Claims The Strategy Failed Because It Had Not Brought About Political Reconciliation. Obama: "I've had a bill in since January that would begin bringing our troops home in a responsible, careful way. And it is my belief that if the president continues on this course, we are going to continue to have the same problems that we've had." (Sen. Barack Obama, Univision Democrat Presidential Debate, Miami, FL, 9/9/07)
It is a course that will not succeed. It is a course that is exacting an enormous toll on the American people & our troops. Democratic Debate 9/13/07
November 2007: Barack Obama Says The Surge Has Not Worked, And Had Potentially Worsened The Situation In Iraq. Obama: "Finally, in 2006-2007, we started to see that, even after an election, George Bush continued to want to pursue a course that didn't withdraw troops from Iraq but actually doubled them and initiated a search and at that stage I said very clearly, not only have we not seen improvements, but we're actually worsening, potentially, a situation there." (NBC's "Meet The Press," 11/11/07)
AS THE CONDITIONS ON THE GROUND IMPROVE, BARACK OBAMA'S POSITION REMAINS THE SAME AND HE SPINS PROGRESS INTO FAILURE
January 2008: Barack Obama Downplays Reductions In The Violence In Iraq Due To The Surge. Obama: "Now, I had no doubt -- and I said at the time, when I opposed the surge, that given how wonderfully our troops perform, if we place 30,000 more troops in there, then we would see an improvement in the security situation and we would see a reduction in the violence. But understand, we started in 2006 with intolerable levels of violence and a dysfunctional government. We saw a spike in the violence, the surge reduced that violence, and we now are, two years later, back where we started two years ago. We have gone full circle at enormous cost to the American people." (Sen. Barack Obama, Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Manchester, NH, 1/5/08)
March 2008: Barack Obama Said He Would "Immediately Begin To Remove Our Troops From Iraq." Obama: "In order to end this war responsibly, I will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. We can responsibly remove one to two combat brigades each month. If we start with the number of brigades we have in Iraq today, we can remove all of them 16 months." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks On Iraq, Fayetteville, NC, 3/19/08)
April 2008: Barack Obama Said That The Surge Has Reduced Violence, But The Iraqis Have Not Taken Advantage Of The "Breathing Room" That The New Strategy Provided. Obama: "I also think that the surge has reduced violence and provided breathing room -- but that breathing room has not been taken the way we would all like it to be taken." (Sen. Barack Obama, Committee On Foreign Relations, U.S. Senate, Hearing, 4/8/08)
May 2008: Obama Communications Director Robert Gibbs Says That Barack Obama Would Go To Iraq To See How We Can Withdraw Troops. Gibbs: "You know, what they're doing over there is separated from their families, giving for their country. It's truly, truly amazing, and I think we would want to go over there and talk to them and see what sort of difficulties they're facing and see how it is that we can begin to carefully remove them and carefully bring them back to their families and bring them back to the United States." (MSNBC's "Morning Joe," 5/29/08)
May 2008: Obama Aides Make Clear That Possible Iraq Trip To Make "Clear That He Intends To Assess How Best To Withdraw U.S. Forces." But they made it clear that he intends to assess how best to withdraw U.S. forces, not to reconsider whether they should be withdrawn." (Jonathan Weisman, "Campaign Jousting Returns To Iraq War," The Washington Post, 5/30/08)
May 2008: Barack Obama Said We Didn't Need More "Spin" About The Surge's Success. Obama: "We don't need more spin about how the surge is succeeding in doing what it was supposed to do which is to get the Iraqi's to stand up and take responsibility for their own future, so we can start sending our troops homes." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks At Town Hall, Rapid City, SD, 5/31/08)

(MSNBC's "News Live," 7/1/08)

Thoughts
Regardless
Submitted on July 17th, 2008 by Respectfulguestof one's view on Iraq. The US and the world is much, much better off with Saddam Hussein removed and the Iraqi government a functioning democracy.
Although not being reported, we are winning in Iraq (probably why not being reported). What a heroic and monumental task performed by our military. It pains me that several in the media and US government have rooted for failure in Iraq to serve their own personal agendas. How pathetic.
Senator Obama was all over the Iraq war, acting like a NY Jet fan on Monday morning, Senator Obama could not wait to pile on the anti-war sentiment. Have not heard too much recently from the media or Senator Obama on Iraq. Unless one wants to count the delete button being vigorously tapped at Camp Obama to erase everything he ever stated regarding the surge.
Talk about pathetic, Senator Obama touts misinterpreted public statements even though his statements are documented such as above. What can be misinterpreted from the following Senator Obama statement?
"I am not persuaded that 20,00 additional troops in Iraq is going to solve the secretarian violence there, in fact I think it will do the reverse". (1/2007-MSNBC)
For some reason through the Democratic Primary until present Senator Obama seems to have been misinterpreted a lot. At this point using the word untruthful to describe Senator Obama's actions would be a complement.
The link above (israelforum.com) has the correct diagnosis for Senator Obama. A real bad case of "full of crap disease", that would be a complement as well.
yep,
Submitted on July 17th, 2008 by John 2000I hear ya DCook.
It's the first time I have seen expressed the idea you said about 'it is not entirely his fault' though it has been floating around in me at a subconscious level. That is a remarkable observation and actually kind of you to make it. I do agree with it, but I do not want to feel the kindness, I guess because he is so far from innocence in all of his countless lies. But yes, it is not his fault that he is where he is. My feeling is that he has made a deal with the 'devil' that he will have to repay at great cost. The question is - when?
What a bumm
Submitted on July 17th, 2008 by DCook36That’s all I can say what a bum is name is Obum’ ma. I guess I should not be so hard on him it is not entirely his fault he does not know what or did not know what he is and or was talking about. We have to place some of the blame on his experts whomever that are you know the ones he talked to privately.
What an idiot he is so insulting to us he really thinks he can say anything and we will eat it up this attitude he has that we are not too smart is enough to make me sick, and I should make sure my kids learn to speak Spanish, I know that’s is an entirely different topic but they are all stacking up on one another.
Ron Paul
Submitted on July 16th, 2008 by John 2000is definitely the best. How close are you to his district? He is expected to win I hope. I might just vote for him as a 'write in' no matter what. I will have to wait until the day I vote to see.
Fight continues
Submitted on July 16th, 2008 by rom12921Sense of resignation about the election I assume? Well, I live in Texas, it will go McCain.
However, Presidential politics are an important forum to discuss what we are and what we will become as a country. As with many others, I don't think my views are well- represented by the candidates pursuing the office or even many that sought the office.
I think highly of Ron Paul's radical ideas. He really thinks the Constitution matters - what a nut! I also think Mitt Romney had some good economic ideas.
You are probably right
Submitted on July 16th, 2008 by John 2000about that Rom. I was just trying to attack the sense of resignation I have been detecting from you lately. It has been uncomfortably close to my own sense of resignation, though perhaps not as thorough as my own. Even where we have sometimes disagreed, I have always sensed hopefulness and fight from you.
My own son relentlessly mocks me for still thinking it matters to care about the election, etc.
Anyway, just let me say that I always appreciate and look forward to your comments.
Change and purge
Submitted on July 16th, 2008 by rom12921You are correct. The two phrases are perhaps interchangable, but I was trying to be nice.
I think of it like this. If you stick to the "change" message, you can never be held accountable for a position. He could say the reason he made the statement, after success in Iraq, is to reflect his confidence and appreciation for the work our military has done. Doesn't need to address why he was certain it would not work.
Update your website, moderate your speech and the electorate that has not already decided doesn't follow things that close anyway. If it hasn't happened within 5-7 days of election day, did it really happen? does it matter?
rom
Submitted on July 16th, 2008 by John 2000You have no opinion regarding the purging from the site?
I understand the point you are making, but even that is weak when you say 'seems not to have alot of experience', when you could have said 'is absolutely ignorant of' ... and been totally accurate.
Of course if will/won't work
Submitted on July 16th, 2008 by rom12921a Presidential candidate that seems not to have alot of experience with military operations.
