WELFARE
Posted 12 weeks 2 days ago byThis came in an e-mail & is in response to those who are the greatest complainers about welfare. " You want to live in a community-like existence in the USA where others will join the military, police or fire department and put their lives on the line for you and make the ultimate sacrifices. You accept services from Americans providing food for your table and the other things that make your life comfortable. You take all of this and believe that by working-- earning a living for yourself and saving money for your own benefit is enough of a contribution to the society you owe your lifestyle to. You don't want to pay taxes and come hell or high water-- everyone should fend for himself. It matters not millions of people didn't earn much in providing the kind of services you enjoyed or that catastrophic events occurred in their lives. Its not your fault so why should you give anything. . Life is difficult and Gov't was created FOR the people because a society that pulls together in all respects will achieve greater things. We already learned on this thread that only 2% of our population are on welfare and most are elderly and children. Those who will always abuse the system are constantly being monitored and discarded away from the system and so they are just no longer a good excuse for being selfish. "
Most welfare benefits go to elderly, blind, and disabled people and mothers with young children
But suppliers of services to welfare recipients account for most of the fraud in welfare. Some physicians, pharmacists, and others have been overpaid because they have made up false bills. The first federal welfare program, began after the Revolutionary War, they provided pensions to war veterans. During the Civil War these pensions were expanded to cover soldiers' widows and orphans. In the early 1900's, primary responsibility for providing welfare benefits shifted from local to state governments. During these years, states enacted programs to aid dependent children and the elderly . The criticisms of welfare ranges over a number of social and economic issues. However, the bottom line to eliminate any of the few real honest-to-goodness welfare cheats is that the USA needs to provide the job opportunities to earn a decent paycheck and benefits. Then without an excuse these cheats can be booted off the system that is necessary for the ones who really need it.

All kinds of WELFARE

We are familiar with the term corporate-welfare so I need not elaborate on that.
I was speaking totally in regards to those who are down on their luck temporarily or for the disabled--elderly --single mothers the-sick - etc.
Of course there will be those who will always abuse the welfare system set up to help those in poverty or listed above but we cannot fix the system so it hurts those it was set up to design to help to start with to punish those who do abuse it.
As far as statistics go---just like the ENRON balance sheets --the gov't can make them read exactly the way they want them to and so how much can you rely on that.
i think
Submitted on July 12th, 2008 by John 2000that is what the consensus here is so far, anonymous. (not sure either)
Not sure what your saying BUT
Submitted on July 12th, 2008 by AnonymousLately the report's Iv'e seen don't show the poor ripping off the Government, Instead the Rich are abuseing the Welfare system. Quite frankly they over charge, Doctor's, Phamacies, Wallgreens & CVS to name a cuople. Also alot of the milatary contract's are paying to much for supply's $65.00 - $80.00 for a $20.00 hammer for example.
So from what I have read and seen it's not the people ripping off the government but the Rich and the Company's that supply the Government.
Just like old saying the rich get Richer an the poor get Poorer.
I agree
Submitted on July 12th, 2008 by AnonymousFrankly welfare has been reformed greatly and the only reform left is to end it completely, which I am sure many would love to see. I believe it is a necessity in this day and time that can be imporved upon but not much.

Submitted on July 12th, 2008 by John 2000It is not clear to me exactly what you are arguing (perhaps that is my fault). I think that I agree with you in general but do you have the time to clarify? I think I saw a story lately where 20% of $300 billion federal Medicare billings were fraudulent due to false billing from physicians, pharmacists, insurance, etc. What is the line you draw on what you are calling Welfare? There are just so many programs and organizations that are 'welfare' in one way or another. When you say creating jobs would fix the problem, it might seem to me that many of those most truly in legitimate and honest need might be those least likely to be able to really work.
Also, it seems like free assistance is available to just about any resident of the US via federal grants for just about anything. These don't require repayment. What do you know about these?
