Topic of the Day: McCain's divorce
Posted 13 weeks 3 hours ago byDigging for skeletons in John McCain's personal closet, the LA Times finds that the Republican presidential candidate had a significant overlap between the end of his first marriage, with Carol McCain, and his courtship of Cindy McCain (nee Hensley).
McCain did not sue his wife for divorce until Feb. 19, 1980, and he wrote in his court petition that he and his wife had "cohabited" until Jan. 7 of that year -- or for the first nine months of his relationship with Hensley.
The article details how McCain, married, met and pursued Cindy Hensley in 1979:
While on a trip as a Navy liaison with the Senate, McCain spied Hensley at the Honolulu reception. In a recent television interview with Jay Leno on the "Tonight Show," Cindy McCain joked about how the Navy captain had pursued her. "He kind of chased me around . . . the hors d'oeuvre table," she said. "I was trying to get something to eat and I thought, 'This guy's kind of weird.' I was kind of trying to get away from him."John McCain was 42; she was 24. During the next nine months, he would fly to Arizona or she would come to the Washington area, where McCain and Carol had a home.Carol McCain later told friends, including Reynolds and Fitzwater, that she did not know he was seeing anyone else.
Do the circumstances surrounding the breakup of McCain's marriage have any effect on how you view him? Is there a moral standard to which you hold presidential candidates? If so, what?

Thoughts
Matters not to me, though
Submitted on July 13th, 2008 by AnonymousMatters not to me, though McCain wasn't my first choice either.
My decision is based on policy issues, not personal ones. McCain's been married to his current wife over 20 years...longer than most marriages last in this country. If he was out chasing skirts today, I would probably take issue with it because he wouldn't be able to keep his eye on the ball...running the country.
I suppose if voters had wanted a lifetime-devoted family man to run on the Republican ticket, Mitt Romney would be the nominee.

Submitted on July 12th, 2008 by janmbAfter experiencing GWB for nearly 8 yrs I was certainly more able to separate Bill Clinton's primitive urges he certainly didn't CHOSE or WANT to control and I knew then this part of his character defect had nothing to do with his genius and qualifications for leadership.
So--do I think McCain's personal life a problem---only for he and his wives past and present.
Both of these characters running for the office of president do not deserve to be the front-runners and I wish we could begin the process over again.
Brings to mind a funny image ...
Submitted on July 12th, 2008 by John 2000Imagine Bill Cosby doing one of his great family skits, but where Obama is his son.
"Barry, what did the preacher tell you in church today?"
answer - "I don't KNOW."
and so on ...

Yes I do believe that Sen. McCain is the lesser of the two evils.
Sen. Obama is a knavish man.

NO one knows
Submitted on July 11th, 2008 by koolmom21NO one knows what goes on behind close doors. My sister got divorced but her husband lived with her for months. They agreed he should live there until after the holidays and until he could find his own place.
As for me judging Sen. McCain on this issue-no.
John 2000,
My thoughts exactly!
It doesn't hold a candle
Submitted on July 11th, 2008 by John 2000to what the honorable Obama was doing in the 80's and 90's and even since. LA Times might consider reporting some of that.
Does the McCain divorce stuff matter? Compared to what? Clinton? Obama?
You know Ike...
Submitted on July 11th, 2008 by Skye RiversI almost had to chuckle when you asked the question whether a moral standard has anything to do with presidential candidates... basically asking if I hold a candidate accountable for their past discretions. Are you serious? If that was the case, no one would be able to pass the run for office test. They are all pigs!
Well, first of all, politicians don't have any morals. They are in it to win no matter what. Just because someone runs for the office of President, does not mean they themselves don't have any dirty little secrets or bones in their closets. They are politicians first, then human beings second and that is really pushing it for me.
This is an important point for me to share. I may not like who is running for President, but as a human being, I have to come to their defense or anyone's defense when it comes to running for office. Unless from birth, we are groomed for this office and lead a life of complete integrity, everyone has done something in their past they are not proud of. It is called Life. If we didn't make mistakes, then we would not learn from them or the experience it has brought forth. I truly believe we do the best we can in any given moment, or we would do better.
Now, on the other hand.. I believe in the saying, fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice, shame on you. We now have a President in office that has played us ALL for fools and yet we keep taking it. I can say that with every breath in my being for the simple reason.. Bush is still in office and has not been impeached; and, we have two more candidates that are and will be just as bad for the American people.
What does it take for each party to nominate a Senator for President? That is the question we should all be asking ourselves. How did McCain and Obama become the nominees when we have one nominee who is still nursing the American people sucking us dry; and the other one who is jacking us off. Do I need to share who is who here or can you guess.
Ike, always a pleasure debating issues with you. Skye
it doesnt really matter
Submitted on July 11th, 2008 by AnonymousAs against McCain as I am, I really see things like this as trivial. It doesn't make me think any less of him. I think he would be an awful president, but this in no way sways my opinion.
