Hamas's " useful Idiots"

We've always spoken to our enemies.

The United States communicated with the Nazis all during WWII through back channels in Switzerland, Vichy France, the carribean, and South America---we even traded with them.  There were some nefarious reasons for these overtures including greed and treason, but for the most part the conduct was in the intrest of hastening an end to a war that killed sixty million people.

These talks were never meant for public consumption.  Each side had reasons for keeping the meetings clandestine.   For America, her vulnerability to enemy propoganda was more acute do to its open society despite the media blackout imposed by Roosevelt.  For Germany, any leaks of information would only launch a mortal purge against the military inteligensia that still existed within the ranks.  This counterbalance of intrests demanded secrecy.

The counterbalance that exist between the United States and Hamas is much more nuanced and complicated.  We ARE speaking to Hamas...and Iran, in ways that seem to escape the mental capacities of Barack Obama and President Carter.  They are clumsy fools in a matter that demands adroit intelligence.

Arabs are master propogandists, eclipsing even  Asians in their understanding of an open American society and it's susceptibility to media images.  In many ways they have a "Madison Avenue" proclivity in marketing their " product " to this country.  When they land a major American personality to star in one of their commercials, in this case President Carter and Barack Obama, American and Israeli back channels become nothing more than whistling contests.

I pray there are still some Roosevelt Democrats out there who understand that an open democracy must employ a degree of subterfuge and disinformation to counterbalance the totalitarian regimes that mean to do it harm.  F.D.R. understood this.  Carter and Obama do not.

For those who wish to understand how America REALLY won WWII, and could win the hearts and minds of the middle east, may I suggest the book " A Man Called Intrepid", by William Stephenson. A must read if you care about the survival of our intelligence services...and the survival of democracy.
