One Grandfather was a 32 Degree Mason and Treasurer of the Klan in Tuscaloosa Alabama.
The other was a full blooded Cossack.
My Father, my uncle and my younger bother have variously been in the Klan, the John Birch Society, the hardest shell of the Baptist Church as well as a few even more unsavory organizations.
I was five years old before i even heard the word "negro"
My first political activity was stuffing envelopes for Goldwater in 1960.
I used to sell subscriptions to "American Mercury" "National Review" and "Human Events" door to door, at one time i had a life time subscription to "National Review"
All through the hippie days i flew the American 13 star flag, and got rations of crap for it.
I was arrested on Federal Felony charges in 1969 at the Washington Mobe protesting the Vietnam War, because i read that Eisenhower thought it was the worst thing we could do to get involved in a land war in Asia. My dad, a Major in the Army told me that. I was acquitted.
I spent decades playing music with real conservative Mountain musicians in Appalachia, and got a good idea of what real America was really about.
I spent a lot of the Eighties studying the origins of Christianity, after discovering the "Gospel Of Thomas," probably reading fifty or so scholarly books by Pagels, Erdman, Allegro and others.
In the 2000's i spent seven years and many thousands of dollars writing a first biography of a great American general "Courtney Hicks Hodges.' This involved trips to the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Kansas where i literally read every word Hodges left behind. I also went to the War College in Carlisle, PA, and two trips to Georgia to interview Hodges' surviving relatives. I did this out of patriotic motives. I have made so far, $627.00 back.
So do not, oh doctrinaire righties, and half baked religicos, assume you know where i am coming from, or what i think, or that i am any sort of typical lefty. You will be wrong.
I am an American. I know American History. I write book reviews for the local paper, where i am the history and science guy.
I know real conservatism when i see it, and what i see these days is a bunch of silliness that has been fed to the unthinking in order to keep a bunch of crooks in office. They keep blinding good people with "Gay Marriage" and Abortion issues, while they have stolen the America i love out from under the American people. They have helped the average American trade Thomas Jefferson for Rush Limbaugh.
And i for one, still know the difference.

"1/4 cup butter
1 no. 2 can tomatoes, sieved (2 cups)
1/4 cup vinegar
1 Tbs. sugar
3 tsp. paprika
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. chili powder
1 1/2 tsp. Worchestershire sauce
1/4 tsp. Tabasco sauce or more according to taste
1 tsp. black pepper
Mix ingredients and simmer for about 15 minutes. Use for basting meat or chicken, and serve as sauce for it as well. This makes a lot of barbecue sauce so you will want to store some for later use. "

On one hand, yes, marriage was intended between a man and a woman; and on the other hand, if there is one, these days we have the concept of gay marriages. According the the dictionary it states as follows:
A legally recognized relationship, established by a civil or religious ceremony between two people who intend to live together as sexual and domestic partners.
Nowhere in the dictionary does it add between a man and a women. It says ceremony between two people.
NOW with that said, who is anyone to say or judge what is right between two people, regardless of their sexual preference, or what is right for them? I know we all have our views on this topic, but the bottom line is, at least for me, love is love and holds no boundary, or preference when it comes to the affairs of the heart.
I THINK sometime we all spend so much time judging peoples gardens, that we let the weeds in our own lives over come the beauty that is surrounds us.

I believe that it has always been the historical intent and practice of the concept associated with 'marriage', and I think it is a tradition worthy of respecting.
I also strongly respect the views of those of many faiths who feel even more strongly than I do about this. I feel that most of this nonsense is an intentional insulting assault upon them. I do not have to have common total beliefs with all faiths to understand the problem here. I can see it as an assault on their civil rights, constitutionally based or not.
How this all plays out down the road of history ... que sera, sera. But, my mind is set on this marriage issue for the balance of my personal duration.

By the time of the Council of Nicaea (sp?) The teachings of Jesus were long gone. There is considerable evidence in the first three Gospels that "Church" was the last thing Jesus wanted to establish.

Governmental contracts are notoriously overpriced and poorly managed despite the whole lowest bidder business. I don't think "stealing" is a strong enough word to describe the process.
I know someone who received a government contract for construction work and was paid $120,000 because the agency (DoD) had to use or lose their budget. The same commercial job would have yielded $10,000-$12000.

"...trillions in debt..." was not created overnight by the Bush Admin. This country has had a national debt for most of its existence. Future Social Security and Medicare payments are an estimated $9,000,000,000,000 short in addition.
"...fatten Bush and Cheney's wallets..." False assertion. Federal employees are prohibited from benefitting financially from decision they make. This is why Cheney had to give proceeds from Haliburton stock options to charity. Most politicans benefit most when they leave office from deals with private business.
Unless this is just an outlet for phony partisan propaganda, there is plenty to criticize the Bush Administration about without making stuff up.

Agree neocons are not conservative. None of the government's business if someone wants to do in their private life. Not to mention most of morality based laws are difficult/ impossible to enforce without soaking the taxpayer and building an army of law enforcement (war on drugs Gestapo).
Agree it is wise to question doctrine and come to your own conclusion about Christianity and other such doctrines. I would also encourage respect and tolerance for those that have come to different conclusions.

conservative politically is to respect traditional institution and distrust government solutions to problems.
I feel the modern day Conservative is Ron Paul. I feel that is as close as we will ever get to they days of Roosevelt and Lincoln when it comes to the GOP.
For me, this is what Liberalism is,
A 19 th -century political idea which championed individual rights, civil liberties, and private property.
I feel this hits the heart of our Declaration of Independence. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
I feel, we had Liberalism at the time and creation of the document long before we could ever give this type of thinking a name. The only thing we knew about this type of thinking, is that it was new, and it was right.
We broke our bonds of tradition of allowing our selves to be ruled by the unruly. We knew we had rights, we knew we where people, people that deserved to be treated no better than the next person. At the time, everyone wanted to be equal and wanted a voice. They wanted rights, and liberties.
I feel that I am a liberal because of this. we are all people, and we all deserve the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities. I feel Government can help maintain these ideas if we allow it to do it's job. If we don't allow Government to do it's job, than we leave our rights up for grab. we leave our selves open to exploitation, and compromise.

Politics notwithstanding, as a historian, your mention of the Gospel Of Thomas is troubling.
Irenaeus served history well by not including this gnostic gospel in the Bible, as this work could not be correlated or cross-referenced.
For example, if eight source materials tell me Napolean went right at Waterloo, and one tells me he went left, I must hold the one suspect and to higher scrutiny.
The Gospel of Thomas does not meet this scrutiny. If your antagonism toward some aspects of Christianity is corrupting your sense of historical accuracy, you must reject the former.

I do agree; there has not been true conservatism in any semblance of the political process in this country since President Reagan. The social issues you express such disdain for should be decided by the states and the federal government should stick to those duties outlined in the constitution. Thomas Jefferson would be appalled with the present level of government regulation and intervention in the private lives of American citizens. He would most likely be leading an armed revolt in an attempt to pursue freedom and regain liberty. Rush Limbaugh was created in response to radical extremist with a destructionist national agenda, a group of people loyal only to anarchy and the disposition of the rule of law. You complain about debate and declare all other ideas and opinions different from yours as BS. I applaud your many and impressive personal and professional accomplishments, but an opinion is still just an opinion; faith and religious beliefs equal simplicity of mind to you and will be your weakness, your blind spot until you realize God is not a sickness but a treasure.
