Why Hillary should want to be VP

Look at the background of recent presidents:

G. W. Bush -- governor (and son of president)

Clinton -- governor

G. H W. Bush -- vice president

Reagan -- governor

Carter -- governor

Ford -- vice president

Nixon -- governor

Johnson -- vice president

Kennedy -- senator

Eisenhower -- general

Truman -- vice president

The jump from senator to president is uncommon.  Further, senators have not fared well in presidential elections.  And she does not appear to be a position to become a governor.

So, if Hillary Clinton’s goal is to be president, she will be better off accepting the vice presidential nomination, if it is offered.  That would increase the probability of the Democrats winning the presidency this year,  improve her standing in the party, and likely set her up as the leading candidate in eight years.

Add to that the possibility that Obama will not serve out a full term.  If a black man is elected president, there will be quite a few angry men with rifles.  For a simple example, look at the stories trying to paint Obama as a muslim combined with those who want to tar him with the words of his Christian minister.  People are already angry at him.  The Secret Service does a good job, so the likelihood is low, I hope.

Being vice president would give her a change to cleanse herself of the some of the baggage accumulated by (and heaped upon) her during Bill’s years in office.  She could become more of her own self.

Being a vice president gives her more power than being a senator (even if you are not Dick Cheney).

Again, if her goal is to become president, she should work towards being offered the vice presidential slot on the Democratic ticket.
