Obama's beer choice looks blue-collar, actually elitist
Posted 1 week 2 days ago byBarack Obama's beer choices are getting an approving nod from McClatchy:
Sen. Barack Obama made a last-minute, surprise appearance at a downtown bar this afternoon, ordering a Pabst Blue Ribbon (beer of the working man) and spending half an hour greeting voters. “Everyone voted?” he hollered, walking up Martin Street as he headed into the Raleigh Times bar about 5:30 p.m.
"Beer of the working man?" Puh-leeze. Oh, sure, there was a time when PBR deserved its proletarian reputation, but I'm here to tell you: PBR is the hipster beer of choice.
I know. I live in a college town. I sometimes go to this bar. There might be blue-collar workers there, but I'm here to tell you: The Replay is filled with shaggy haired hipsters in skinny jeans listening to punk rock and punk bluegrass. I think it's wonderful. But I also swill lattes, and worse, I'm the kind of person who will support Barack Obama in November.
And at the end of the night, the recycling (see? see?) barrel is filled with, you guessed it, PBR cans. And pretty much only PBR cans.
The New York Times already reported this five years ago, for pete's sake!
Why am I telling you this? Because I'm worried that the press might stop examining Barack Obama's lifestyle choices to prove how "out of touch" he is with the real America. The truth must be revealed.

that would be, for us waist
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by John 2000that would be, for us waist conscious pale-blue-collar demographic on the coast then: a type of E-lite Bitters.
I see exactly what you mean. Thanks.
No, no, no. You're confused
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by Jim LakelyLet me try to clear this up for you, John.
Better bitters aren't necessarily better than bitter beers. You see, not all beers are bitters, but most bitters are beers. Obviously, some bitters are better than other bitters. And a bitter, by the by, is better than most beers. Yet some beers that taste bitter -- even some bitters -- are not a beer that you should be imbibing, let alone bestowing Bay Area blue ribbons upon.
All that said, if you like bitter beers, extra special bitters are the beers for you.
Got it?
so, better bitters is better
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by John 2000so, better bitters is better than bitter beers?
or
bitter beers is more bitter than better bitters?
-confused here in Bay area
In my bitterness...
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by Jim Lakely... I like to cling to bitters, ESB (extra special bitter) to be exact. The paler the ale the better.
Re: Not the same beer
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by JoelOK, John, I have to admit that made me laugh out loud. I'm not even going to try to top it.
This is not the same beer I

... in bitterness they cling to their beers, their religion
... it's time now for a great national dialog regarding the beer issue
Re: His friends' beer
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by JoelExactly, Anon! Now you're in the spirit of things! And Michelle Obama obviously hates America too much to drink a domestic. She probably goes to "Old Chicago" purely to order from the Beer World Tour Menu!
Jim: Man, I know I'm old. I don't linger at The Replay. But every now and again, a band plays that I like. And refuse to let the kids have all the fun.
His friends beer choices
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by AnonymousIt would be interesting to know what his friends choice of beer might be:
Jeremiah Wright: 20 years advisor.
Tony Rezo: Indited Fixer.
William Ayers: Unrepentant terriorist.
George Soros: Mr Money bags.
On beer, PBR, kids, hipness and Obama ...
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by Jim LakelyFirst off, Joel, you're an adult now. One with a real job. Stop hanging out in college bars. You don't know it (apparently), so I'll tell you: The 20-something "shaggy-haired hipsters" think you're kind of pathetic.
Don't take too much offense, my balding friend. The peirced and tatted crowd think everyone over the age of 26 or so to be "old" and certainly way too uncool for the room. I get those looks from time to time -- though mostly from kids on public transit (and even in my own office). Like water off a duck's back, I say ...
Or, better, like PBR down the gullet. I refuse to buy into the idea that PRB is "hip" just because the New York Times says it is (or, rather, especially because the NYT says so). It is also rather meaningless that because "kids" drink it, PBR is now "hip." Put aside the faux coolness and what's left: Young people picking a cheap beer out of relative obscurity and pretending that they "discovered" it. Now that's pretty pathetic.
Fact is, young people tend to gravitate toward cheap beer. In Baltimore, it's "Natty Bo," otherwise known as Natural Bohemian. In Pittsburgh, it's Iron City or IC Light. And in my college days, we went even cheaper, buying kegs of "The Beast" -- Milwaukee's Best.
But drinking cheap beer, apparently, is not very cool when you are willing to pay $5 for a triple-shot skinny caramel latte. So, you have to pretend that the swill you're passing around to lube up the ladies is somehow better than it actually is. Thus the "hipifying" of the mill worker's post-shift beer.
So, worry not. Obama pretending that he actually likes -- and would willingly drink in private -- Pabst Blue Ribbon will do him no lasting harm. Unless, of course, you prefer your candidates to actually have taste in beer -- which would make a difference to this once-frequent homebrewer.
Cheers! (literally)
Jim

Obama is dissembling!
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by BenNo way Obama is a beer drinker. He's a latte-drinking, chardonnay-swilling liberal elitist to the core! If the press corps were doing its job, we would know whether Obama has a wine cellar in his Chicago house and what's in it. Mostly foreign wines, I'd wager. We've not yet gotten to the bottom of Obama's snobbery.
Re: Me? Kidding?
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by JoelBlackjack: The beer choice is very, very important. It lets us know important things about Obama -- his judgment, his values, his secret Muslim elitist affinity for cheap beer that not coincidentally is also favored by 1960s bomb-making radicals.
It all fits together.
You're kidding me, right?
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by zz_blackjackYou're kidding me, right? People are actually making judgements on him based off of what beer he drinks?
People have blown a lot of things about him up and out of proportion, and I can even see why for some of them (i.e. the Wright controversy), but beer? C'mon if this is really weighing on your mind then you need to take a few days off of politics to put things into perspective.

Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by AnonymousEveryone knows that Natty Light is the beer of the working man. Natural Light is brewed and distributed by Budweiser, so it gets the nod of folks too cheap or poor to buy the other swill they produce. As for Obama, I bet he had a Shiner Bock when he came to Texas, but people here are too arrogant to notice that he was simply pandering when he did it.
Re: College beer
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by JoelClearly, I have a lot to teach you about elitism.
It's not about how much money or power you have, or whether you want to use that power and money in a fashion that benefits others beside yourself. It's about attitude.
So yes, PBR is cheap. But so is Bud Light, which is the cheap beer of the suburban masses. Hipsters don't want to drink the cheap beer of the suburban masses; they'd rather bring a retro-ironic sensibility to their drinking and so choose the "beer of the working man."
In other words: Elitist.
Really, what?
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by AnonymousThis isn't even noteworthy. College aged kids drink it cause it's cheap, and over the years has gained an aura of being an underground-cool-hipster beer (see the movie "Blue Steel")
To classify this beer as elitist is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. What, are "working class" people not allowed to buy PBR cause its been taken over by scenesters? PBR is still immensely popular with your everyday American.
If Obama starts drinking double-IPAs or Tripels then give me a call.
College Crowd
Submitted on May 7th, 2008 by AnonymousAs a College Student, I believe that the beer of choice for the college crowd is not chosen by taste but by price. PBR is a foul tasting beer, but it is cheap. I don't see how this has any bearing on whether or not the 'working man' drinks PBR or not.
