American Dream or Nightmare?
Posted 22 weeks 2 days ago byI would have liked to think that in the time humans have been on this planet, that we have evolved into something smarter than your average cro magnon. True, humans have made their lives better in the long run. We were able to expand the human life expectancy from say.. 25, to almost 90+. This is a good thing, I guess. But how far is too far?
I would like to point out, that human life has never been easier. I say this, because we now have medications for illnesses or disorders that we've never had before. Honestly, when is the last time you heard of someone suffering from Restless Leg Syndrome? As a race of people, I really think this is a step back from evolution. It sounds like rambling, but I'm trying to convey a point here. The fact that we now have medications and treatments for the silliest things, are astonishing! Do you think that our forefathers suffered from Restless Leg Syndrome? See, there are words that the medical field likes to use in their advertising campaigns, in order to keep you afraid of something that you don't even realize is there. "Suffer", "Syndrome", "Disorder" are just some of the words that these advertisers want you to hear. People are so ready to believe that there is something wrong with them, that they run out to the doctors every time they get a chill. It's frightening.
We as a race, are sheep. We're being controlled by people who don't care about us, only how much money we give them. And for what? So these people can have themselves a nice house and nice car? It's a step back, I say. What's one of the main focuses of evolution? Survival of the Fittest, right? Well it certainly seems that the fittest, nowadays, are those people like me, who have no insurance, and have to let their bodies fight off whatever ails them. But no, we have this whole flock of people who would rather take some pill, than let their bodies fight it off. For what? The instant gratification of knowing that you might not be as sick as long? People, that's what the problem is. This is what's wrong with people. People want their instant gratification, rather than waiting for the end result.
What people have forgotten, is that when you have everything coming to you at the speed of light, it no longer becomes anything worth having. We feel so inconvenienced when we can't get our food, or our medicine, or our TV shows as quick as possible.
Patience. That's what the world lacks these days. We're driven insane by this entire culture of having everything now, now, now. When the people that have to produce this stuff have to work twice as hard to provide the products that people take for granted.
I really despise humanity, even though I am a part of it. I just don't understand how an entire race of beings would be driven by their greeds.
But let me be honest here. I may be talking about humanity, but what I really should be saying is American Culture. I really shouldn't even say humanity, because I'm sure most of the world doesn't think the way we do. We, being Americans. I can't stand the culture. I can't stand the capitalist culture we live in. We have people who can't even get healthcare in this country, yet we can wage wars based solely on lies? We can keep pumping out consumer goods, but we can't get our own people healthy? Something is wrong. Something has to be done. But you know what, it can't, and won't, happen. I don't see this country working for it's people, only what's in the people's pockets.
There are news stories every night about how people have to work two, sometimes three jobs just to survive. I have to wonder if this is what the 'American Dream' is that they were talking about. I hate quoting people, but I'm going to do it: George Carlin once said that "That's why they call it the 'American Dream." Because you have to be asleep to believe it."
So this is how the human race is going to evolve? This is how it ends? Hm. I am not impressed.
-That is all.

Submitted on May 4th, 2008 by HamiltonWow, the radical left is a very angry group of people and so very unhappy. Nothing good has happened in a hundred years, but when the left takes over and kicks capitalism to the curb…everything will be great. Quoting George Carlin, the man who says his hero is Ted Kisinsky, and applauded his killing of innocent people. I realize I spelled that nut’s name wrong, I just didn’t care enough about him to look it up.
Agreed
Submitted on May 3rd, 2008 by KansasGirlWhile I think some of the ailments and medications you rail about are less than frivolous (just because our ancestors lived in pain-or just didn't live-doesn't mean that was the best way to do it!), your point is well taken. America is incredibly greedy and selfish, and while that's our right in this capitalist society (which I actually like, by the way), it may not be in our own best interest. The rest of the world is well aware that we don't care about them. My neighbors, whom I have never spoken to, are well aware that I don't care about them. And that's not me being callous - I just don't have the time. But that's a choice I make, and when I need to borrow a hose or be rushed to the hospital, it's a little worrisome to think I can't really knock on the neighbor's door.
We've gotten to a place, culturally, where friends are seen as liabilities rather than strengths - where relying on oneself seems the best route. Out of this has grown the excess, the impatience, the lack of perspective you find so disgusting. We simply do not care if something doesn't affect us. But I would say that all this can change, and will, if you get involved to do just that. Volunteer, join a group of other people who think we're a self-centered arrogant bunch of jerks (which is a kind description, I think) and change it. Give some of your time to the less fortunate who will never forget to say "thank you" - because they mean it. Write a letter to your Congressman about combatting world hunger. Find one problem, devote some time to it, and maybe you might change your mind about what American culture can be.
So ...
