OUR LOTTERY DOLLARS - WHO IS SCRATCHING WHO?
Posted 16 weeks 5 days ago byI have been pondering this a long time and would really appreciate some feedback from the red/blue folks.
QUESTION:
Where is our lottery money going, and why isn't it going to our school systems to help fund better programs where it was originally intended. What chaves my wings is that I heard that the CEO's of the lottery are making the big bucks, while all our programs are being cut left and right. What's up with that?
Do you know how much money is made on Lottery monies on each state and where the hell is it going?
This is just a thought, and hopefully a start of a great debate. I add more to this blog later tonight, but think about it... WHO IS SCRATCHING WHO?

Re: Good, BUT
Submitted on May 3rd, 2008 by KansasGirlSorry, it was me who was unclear. The lottery works the same way - it's ultimately determined by the legislation that created the lottery or, if the lottery is privately run, legalized such enterprise in your state. Gaming is pretty standard in that way, and I was just using casinos as an example. But there should also be a lottery oversight body who can provide you with a breakdown of revenues if you go digging.
Good, BUT...
Submitted on May 3rd, 2008 by Skye RiversIt was the LOTTERY tickets in each state I was referring to. I am sorry if I was not clear. The casinos and such forth, well they are what they are in my opinion unless it is native american casinos who govern their own.
It depends
Submitted on May 3rd, 2008 by KansasGirlI'm actually a little knowledgeable on this topic: where the money goes and who gets it depends on which state you're in.
There's no doubt that casinos are money-making enterprises, so don't expect the guys at the top not to be making big bucks. That's capitalism at work, and it's not likely to change. But states make money off casinos in several ways - licensing fees (permission to build and operate, basically), taxes, duty fees paid to the state when a casino opens (a gift of money up front, just because), and side revenue from the tourists they attract. In my state, the fact that casinos here will probably stop the 30% of revenue that casinos across state lines get from our residents also adds a lot of value. We won't be losing tax revenue to our neighboring states.
But the amounts of all this money and what it goes to is determined by the legislation legalizing gaming in each state, usually, so how it gets used is a function of the people you elect to office. The actual gaming companies don't control any of that, so write your congressman if you want to know how that money is being used . . . or better yet, get a copy of the legislation that sets gaming law. There is usually an oversight body, some sort of commission, that rules over gaming enterprises, too - so you might be able to call them and get some answers.

The goverment treats that money like a piggy bank. they take and never replace or think they should and the schools well give 1 million more from our txes.
Great questions --
Submitted on May 2nd, 2008 by John 2000I would guess that you really know the basic answers.
If it is possible for you to locate real accountability and supporting opinions in this regard to this blog topic, I think it is a valuable topic to explore.
It strikes at the heart of the layer upon layer upon layer of coverings that we are provided with as citizens and taxpayers and 'game' players.
Good luck.
