CHURCH - WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? WRIGHT?
Posted 22 weeks 3 days ago byI wrote this blog TO OBAMA OR NOT TO OBAMA AND THAT IS THE QUESTION OR IS IT? I received the below thought and felt compelled to share it regarding Obamas association with Pastor Wright and also the media's responsibility... here is the thought that was shared, then my response that followed. I welcome a discussion on this one.

A man is more than whom he knows. If that wasn't the case, how many people would be crucified for someone in their family killing someone else. The fact of the matter is, am I unfit to be president because I attended a church in which the pastor had an affair, and after we knew about it we stayed at the church? You attend church in part for the sermon, but in part to be with like-minded people who love God. The Pastor can't get you into heaven, so why should he stop Barack from getting into the White House?
I'm sickened on how many times Rev. Wright was the leading story on Monday and Tuesday, meanwhile, the police who shot Sean Bell in NYC were acquitted on all charges. What's more important? Unarmed man being killed by cops, or an linguistically armed man with a mic?

CHURCH - WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? WRIGHT?

Well said! Thank you for your viewpoint.
If I may add to your comment on the attending of ones church and the reasons why one does whether it is for the sermon which is given by the spiritual leader; OR surrounding yourself with like minded people who such as yourself enjoy the connection one get's in a church surrounding lending the feeling being closer to GOD, the Omnipresence.
Now, I can only speak for me, but if I am attending a church of any kind, it is usually because I am so moved and inspired by my spiritual leader/teacher and that persons words of wisdom, I want to hear what they has to say. I want to enrich my life in that wisdom each week.
Then comes the like minded people that also support the words and wisdom of their spiritiual leader/teacher as well that one would consider a community of strength.
I agree with you that a Pastor can not get you into Heaven or the White House. You are right. But do you not feel that if you are attending a church, you are attending that church for what you are getting out of it. Isn't that why we go to begin with, what we are getting out of it. It goes back to this... what is in it for me.

3 TO 1 ********
Submitted on May 1st, 2008 by AnonymousI'm a 60 yr. old man , and I've never been instrested in who win's or who lose in presidential race, But hearing Obama speaking about change, and this world's future, he make's me want to vote, because now I care who wins.
Now to my subject, I hear every day on tv, that obama is outspending clinton 3 to 1
Now there's Hillary (1) and there's Chelsey (2) and bill(3),There is three human beings. I feel having three people speaking for you is far better than any dollar bill, people can hear Bill, Hillary, and Chelsey, money talk's,but not to people.

Great discussion

That is only my experience, but I've found head pastors to be pompous and arrogant and usually too absolutist for my taste. Perhaps I have a problem with pastors, perhaps with organized religion. But I have been fortunate enough to have mentors other than my pastors in every church I have been to. Youth leaders, choir directors, small group leaders, and friends who I now consider family - these people have taught me more about God and being in community with others than anyone who was ordained to be in charge.

Submitted on May 1st, 2008 by AaronI think there is a difference between having a family member that kills someone and following a religious leader. The family member is there regardless of choice, however, we do choose our religious leaders and we typically choose them because their views are closely in line with ours and that is where the problem rises. It is an issue of choice. You choose to join a cult or a gang or follow an extremist and based on that choice you are considered a part of what that group stands for. It's hard to go to Klan meetings without being a racist.
