This says it all.... While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old Texas
rancher, whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor
struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around
to Barack Obama and his bid to be our President. The old rancher said,'Well,
ya know, Obama is a 'post turtle'.' Not being familiar with the term, the
doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was. The old rancher said,'When you're
driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle
balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'.' The old man saw a puzzled look on
the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know he didn't get up
there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do
while he is up there, and you just want to help the dumb ass get down.'
Obama = post turtle

Uh-oh. Somebody should tell Barack Obama this is just going to make him look like one o' them elitists:
Senator Obama counts among the writers who have influenced his thinking two giants of Jewish American letters, Saul Bellow and Philip Roth.
The Democratic presidential hopeful shared his admiration for the two authors yesterday at a meeting with Philadelphia-area Jewish leaders, addressing the crowd from the bima as his campaign passed out buttons with the candidate’s name spelled in Hebrew letters, according to a pool report released by the campaign.
Obama is reputedly having problems attracting the Jewish vote, but "some of my favorite authors are Jewish!" probably isn't the way to go.
Character revisited
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by chief28.retJoel, et al,
I am not, nor did I say, that McCain is without flaws. What I said was his flaws pale (in my opinion) to the character flaws the others have shown.
I still believe the WP is [heavily] slanted towards the left.
truce ?
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by John 2000Okay Barrie, Joel,
I have carefully reread the article and concede it not to be so much of a 'hit piece' as my somewhat hasty original reading led me to believe. So, I owe you one on that score. It actually was a pretty good article.
Nor do I agree that the Washington Post is the most liberal paper in the land.
Joel, it was you who first mentioned 'liberal media bias' in this thread, I believe.
So far as the Bosia-gate bashing went, I thought it was WAY overblown. The most ridiculous bashing was from Obama network aka MSNBC and of course that lunatic blowhard, Dick Morris, on Fox (an odd marriage to say the least). The effects of his raw attacks on her are counterproductive in my view. I ahve actually come to respect her more over the past few looooooooong weeks.
I'm listening to For What It's Worth (Buffalo Sprinfield)
truce?
So far as Senator Obama goes, I honestly believe that his candidacy is seriously compromised and it will become increasingly evident.
Character
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by Barrie ChurchThank you Joel.
As to this issue, I am constantly surprised by what people believe constitutes "good" character. Somehow Mrs Clinton's misstatement becomes lack of integrity. Her years of public service apparently pale in comparison to this one utterance, according to chief28. And John2000 complains of truthfulness and honesty questions as regards Senator Obama. Somehow because McCain has SIMPLY mentioned his temper he seems to be given a pass. And yet Senator Clinton apologizes for a misstatement and Senator Obama apologizes and gives a brilliant speech in regards to his Pastor and for these two it is not enough.
The double standard continues....
Re: Character
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by JoelThere are lots of papers more liberal than the Washington Post -- which, after all, supported the invasion of Iraq on its editorial page.
But to clear up something chief: We're fine learning about the defects of the Democratic candidates, but when we learn about the defects of the Republican candidate its proof of liberal media bias? That's true only if you think NOT having a conservative bias is a liberal bias.
Character does matter
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by chief28.retIf a bad temper is a character flaw, it pales in comparison to lack of integrity ("I had to run from snipers in Bosnia after I landed"..."i misspoke", etc) and I am very concerned about the hidden character of someone whose wife is adamantly anti-American, and whose philosophical bent was shaped by a racist, extremist pastor (regardless of whether he was in the navy or not) over 20 years.
John McCain's temper is well documented, and even he admits it. and as for his convictions, try spending time as a prisoner of war, keeping faith with his country, and serving her faithfully ever since under the intense limelight of the press, your record, and your character.
The only one insane enough to try and question McCain's character is the Washington Post, the most liberal newspaper in the world. I'd rank it up there with the national enquirer. Character is only an issue with the other two, not with McC.
Republican language ...
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by John 2000I will cut some slack and benefit of the doubt here, but Republicans, most Independents, and probably many Democrats spell it 'obscenity' rather than 'obsenity'.
Thanks for the Republican language. Though, as a moderate independent type, I have learned to be politically multi-lingual living here, in The Bay Area, as I do. I hardly would call this a right wing world!
Of course, McCain's character matters to me. Actually, the harshest attacks on Clinton's character I have seen recent weeks emanate from places like MSNBC and the blog arenas. People are trying to discern Obama's character and will continue to do so. So far, we have not detected any age or anger issues with him. There are a number of truthfulness and openness questions that may be taken as "character issues".
McCain very openly discusses and admits to temper issues at numerous times in his life. He has spoken of it and written of it.
If the Post story was merely to inform, then I could accept that; as well as your passing it along. Do you swear that you believe that it was merely to inform?
It is too bad that the primary incident you refer to preceded YouTube. So many downloads there would be.
ciao
Convictions
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by Barrie ChurchI will frame my questions in a way anyone can understand and I shall use Republican Language. I believe "character matters" is a refrain from the Clinton era. Does McCain's character matter to you? Does Obama's, or Clinton's. If so then I can't imagine that the Washington Post article would be seen as anything but an illumination of that character. Do you disagree? Have you heard or seen in, your right wing world, descriptions of Obama's or Clinton's characters that sound like this? Have they been known to march up to an adversary and stab their fingers in their chests and scream obsenities. Do you do this? I would bet you don't. I don't. If one of my children were to act that way I would give them a time out. Wouldn't you? To me this is a character issue that needs to be explored.
The weather is 80 degrees and sunny here in Southern California: i.e. a bit chilly.
Convictions?
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by John 2000are you suggesting Obama should drop out? I am having a hard time following your discourse, here.
How's the weather today?
Chris Matthews?
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by John 2000Where did CM come into this? Does he have temper issues?
He's on that Obama network with Keith et al, right? No temper issues there, nope! Hey, at least CM has a sense of humor.
... well, then, perhaps you would feel safer having a beer McC served with plastic cups ... it works at ball games ... er, usually.
Convictions
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by Barrie ChurchHaven't we learned in the last 7+ years that just being passionate about your convictions is not enough? We need to know what your convictions are. And I firmly believe that if you think that government is evil and/or the bad guy, please, please, please don't vie for the top spot of that government.
Yes
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by chief28.retI don't mind a Pres with a temper/passion of convictions. Better than the alternative(s)
Attack Journalism?
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by Barrie ChurchI think not. Before the election of W , Chris Matthews would often ask out loud," Who do you wanna have a beer with?" Apparently Matthews wanted to have that beer with W.
I'd love to have a beer with any three of our candidates, but I'd be afraid that McCain might throw the bottle at me..
I can trust a person with a temper ...
Submitted on April 20th, 2008 by John 2000far more than one who is cold and detached, EU'esque if you will. I would hope that Obama has a 'temper'. We know both Clintons do. We know about Roosevelt. We know about Truman. We know about Ike. We know about JFK. We know about Johnson. We know about Nixon. We probably know about Ford. We know that Carter was/is a wimp. We know about Reagan, and GHWB. GWB has kept it pretty well out of sight.
Look, the article is a typical piece of attack journalism.
I would expect that everyone in Congress does. Hey, Washington Post, you want to play the temper card? You sure 'bout that?
So, Dems are going to run on temper and age issues.
Wonder what Robert Byrd thinks of that, that old hothead.
LOL
