Hillary’s Dilemma: Guns, Votes and Virginia Tech
Posted 13 weeks 6 days ago byTonight, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will face off in their final debate prior to the Pennsylvania primary.
While the two will battle over much familiar ground, the topic of guns- specifically the right to own them- should be the hottest topic of the night.
Guns are a huge topic of interest in Pennsylvania.
On the one hand, you have a city whose nickname is Killadelphia, where 127 people have been murdered already this year. Last year over 400 were killed. Philadelphia’s murder rate is higher than New York, Chicago or Los Angeles.
On the other hand, Pennsylvania has vast rural areas, areas where gun ownership is seemingly guaranteed both by the Constitution and by God.
There are over 250,000 members of the National Rifle Association in Pennsylvania, more than any other state in the union. While every year gun control bills are submitted every year in the Pennsylvania legislature, they are routinely voted down.
Hillary, a long time supporter of gun control measures, has changed her tune dramatically during her time in Pennsylvania. As she courts the conservative vote, she’s been weaving yarns about hanging out with gramps, getting a nice warm gun in her hands and firing off a few rounds. A bemused Obama called her “Annie Oakley.”
While Obama’s remarks were hilarious, the issue of gun control is not a laughing matter. It certainly isn’t today.
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the massacre at Virginia Tech University. Thirty-two students were murdered on that day by a mentally unstable student who had no problem acquiring the weapons he used.
This was not one of those shootings where the neighbors were shocked by the assailant’s behavior. Everyone knew this guy was crazy and dangerous.
Hillary mourned for the Virginia Tech victims, but tonight the subject of the massacre is an inconvenient one for her. She’s thinking more about the 250,000 Pennsylvanian members of the NRA than the 32 lives lost at Virginia Tech or the hundreds killed in Philadelphia.
In all likelihood this strategy will work for Hillary. The conservative democrats are heavily leaning to Hillary and they will probably hand her a victory in next week’s primary.
Like her husband, though, Hillary should be more careful of who she jumps into bed with.
The conservatives she is so fervently courting don’t care much for women’s rights, reproductive rights, gay rights or civil rights. They do love their guns, though and Hillary is happy to throw out the rest of the Constitution and leap onto the Second Amendment bandwagon.
Hillary ought to visit the NRA’s web site . Take a look today and you’ll see that there is no mention of Virginia Tech. The lead story remains the obituary for Charlton Heston. There’s no talk of the Pennsylvania primary. The only mention of Pennsylvania in the lead stories is an invitation for women to participate in a turkey hunting clinic in Johnstown in late May.
Think Hillary will attend? Nah… the voting in Pennsylvania will be over by then. She’ll be done with her turkey hunting in Pennsylvania by May.
By then, her gun will be back in the holster. The only hunting on her mind will be the hunt for more delegates… the biggest game of all.
