Rev. Wright issue may give us a lot to chew on.

As a naive midwestener, I had no idea that it was commonplace for racially charged messages like the Rev. Wright's to be preached in sermons in black churches throughout America.  If this is true, as the national media reports after exploring the issue, and after listening to Sen. Obama, then we may have a while to go before we can ever get past our divisions.

It may be commonplace to hear these messages in black churches, but I think it is rare to hear this kind of thing in white churches, although I'm sure there are exceptions.  The mear fact that we, the media, and national figures like Sen. Obama  use the terms "white and black churches" show we have a long way to go.  When will they ever become just churches?

It may explain why so many young adult black kids have a chip on their shoulder as they go out into the world.  Is it possible some of them got it at church?  If their young minds were unable to grasp these messages in the same context as their adult parents do, it is understandable that racially charged messages like we've heard from Rev. Wright have had great influence on their lives for many years.

After reading and listening to all the reporting on this issue over the past few weeks, it causes me to wonder.  If it's Okay, and if it's the norm, and if it continues, who is really responsible for the continuing racial division in America?  Maybe if this stuff wasn't preached in church, the next generation might grow up with the ability to make some progress towards ending the things that divide us.  But if young black childen continue to be exposed to to these hate messages in church it's going to be difficult to make much progress.

Like they say, keep doing what your doing, you'll keep getting what your getting.
