Obama's "More Perfect Union"
Posted 34 weeks 2 days ago by
There's been a lot of indignation by white people about Rev. Wright. "How dare he think that way!?" is the gist of it. It's a free country; he is entitled to his opinion. If you are surprised by it, then you haven't listened to the black narrative. I grant you your shock, but you should wonder about the "Why" of it. A marine, like Rev. Wright, has laid his life on the line for this country. Why would he say such things?
The history lesson contained in Obama's "More Perfect Union" speech is not unlike the history lesson contained in Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. This is an attempt by a people who have been systematically wronged to overcome their anger, as touched upon in Rev. Wright's sermons, and to be addressed as human beings. Count slavery; count de juris segregation (Jim Crow laws); count the de facto segregation that continues to this day, and you have a 400 year legacy of oppression. This injustice will not disappear; the damage it has wrought will take generations to right.
My advice is simple: do yourself a favor. If you haven't already educated yourself about the plight of African-Americans, if you have not watched Obama’s full speech, if you have not watched Rev. Wright's full sermons, do it. There isn't raving anti-Americanism here. These are real people, dealing with real anger, about the real problems they face every day because of racism, past and present.
This isn't some sound-bite issue, folks. Don’t let the media decide what you should think about it. Give it some real thought.

Thoughts
Here is what I hear:
Submitted on March 29th, 2008 by Knightmare"Are we all responsible for the past acts of a few, I don't think so. So get over it, you [blacks] have every opportunity as white America has." (sic) [brackets mine]
As a society, the United States systematically denied black families opportunities to accumulate financial and educational capital well into the 20th century. As a result, blacks have a plethora of disadvantages. They are entitled to a level playing field.
"Get over it" you say. You say blacks "... have every opportunity as white America has." Bullshit. Urban black schools are still segregated. Read Kozol's Savage Inequalities and then tell me that those students have every chance a suburban student has. Black students are disproportionately trapped in schools that prepare them for nothing but failure. They are too poor to move away, as whites have, so their future is entombed in America's ghettos. They do not get a shot at the American Dream.
"Get over it," you say. I can't get over that.
Let me summarize the rest of your argument: Obama shouldn't be a presidential candidate; this is because he didn't repudiate Wright's statements; because he didn't I won't vote for him. (Implied: Because I won't vote for him, he shouldn't be a candidate.)
Obama did repudiate Wight's statements. In no uncertain terms, he said that this kind of black anger is an obstacle to the unified effort that must be made to overcome racial inequality in America. He stated that he could not in good conscience abandon the church because of the good it does. Wright has been and remains instrumental in the church's many successes. Obama acknowledged Wright's successes as a Pastor, yet stated that he strongly disagreed with Wright's radical sentiments. I felt this was appropriate.
Rather than throwing Wright under the bus, Obama used his pastor's failings as a metaphor for the state of race relations in America, and asked all Americans to step up and deal with the problem. Perhaps that's where your objection lies. You're saying, "get over it," and he insists, "deal with it, first."
This is why Reverend
Submitted on March 27th, 2008 by AnonymousThis is why Reverend Jeremiah Wright said these things. He meant syphilis not Aids, Katrina, Monica Lewinsky and roosters coming home to roost!!!! This is what Senator Obama speech was about too. How most people don't want to know the truth. The bible says you reap what you sow. I'm American; Never been to Africa, and I don't know anyone there. Stop F***kn ignoring the facts. Obama did't say these things.
By now you’ve probably heard Wright’s “chickens coming home to roost” comment about 9/11. What you might not know is that Wright was quoting directly from Edward Peck, former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq. If you watch the entire sermon, you’ll hear Wright say that he saw Peck make this comment on Fox. Unfortunately, Fox “news” conveniently left that part of the sermon out of their coverage.
Again:
From CNN: “One of the most controversial statements in this sermon was when he mentioned ‘chickens coming home to roost.’ He was actually quoting Edward Peck, former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and deputy director of President Reagan’s terrorism task force, who was speaking on FOX News. That’s what he told the congregation. He was quoting Peck as saying that America’s foreign policy has put the nation in peril.”
Reverend Wright talked about the United States giving Aids to blacks: He meant Syphilis. ”In The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, The United States government did something that was wrong—deeply, profoundly, morally wrong. It was an outrage to our commitment to integrity and equality for all our citizens. . . . clearly racist. ''''''—President Clinton's apology for the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment to the eight remaining survivors, May 16, 1997. For forty years between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis.''' These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for “bad blood,”1 their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all. The data for the experiment was to be collected from autopsies of the men, and they were thus deliberately left to degenerate under the ravages of tertiary syphilis—which can include tumors, heart disease, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and death. “As I see it,” one of the doctors involved explained, “we have no further interest in these patients until they die." infoplease dot com
Reverend Wright talked about Monica Lewinsky. Ex-President Clinton had sex with Monica Lewinsky, and intern, in the oval office over 11 times. He also had affairs with Jennifer Flowers and Paula Jones that were made public.
Reverend Jeremiah Wright talked about Hilliary Clinton. Hillary Clinton lies and tells false Bosnian war stories. She lies regarding Nafta. That surfaced in her first lady papers. President Bill Clinton turned Universal Healthcare over to his wife. Senator Clinton started on Universal Healthcare three days after her husband started his first tour and she never accomplished anything because she alienated everyone-- just like her campaign tactics. Senator Clinton had eight years to give America Universal Healthcare--whats different now. There's also Whitewater. The Clintons were indicted through the federal government. Also, Hillary Clinton promised upstate New York 250,000--now they are negative over 50,000 jobs and she running for President. Besides being big liars, among other things, theres blue stained dress, indictments, Jennifer Flowers, Paula Jones etc. Barack Obama is getting judged on what someone else said that is full of truth. People don't want to know the truth.
Reverend Jeremiah Wright talks about Katrina. Almost 2,000 people died and the rest were left for five days to rot. People sitting dead in wheelchairs, kids getting raped, people getting infections from the infectious water. In a country where we help build the land and never got 40 acres and a mule. How happy for a man who help with poverty Aids and served 8 years in the Marines. Yes, Reverend Jeremiah Wright is a Veteran. Not, "god damn America," but "damn what are we suppose to say???" I love my country but my country doesn't loves me back. Again, stop acting like these things happening in this day and time are in the minds of black people or African Americans who don't know sh**t about Africa.
My point is "if your kid was lost in a big forest or park with a bunch of white men or a bunch of black men and you were looking frantically for him or her, in your heart, your chance of getting your precious child back safely and alive are higher with whom??? Stop acting like these things are in the minds of black people. These are facts!!!
Why is Obama still a candidate?
Submitted on March 27th, 2008 by AnonymousObama is a candidate because he got a wonderful education, and he moved forward in his life, not backwards into the Black experience. Black Liberation Theology has tainted Rev. Wright and for Barack not to repudiate this poor excuse for a minister is reprehensible. Black entitlement jargon is BS. Blacks are no better than any race, creed. And we are not responsible for the acts of Black Slavery merchants who sold their ancestors, not responsible for the acts of the Dutch slave merchants who transported blacks to America ages ago. Yes there have been injustices towards black people, but there also have been injustices towards Irish immigrants, Italian immigrants. Are we all responsible for the past acts of a few, I don't think so. So get over it, you have every opportunity as white America has. What you do to secure that dream is on you. Your life is what you make of it in other words. Obama is where is now due to securing a upscale education, and most likely the rearing of that white grandmother, who probably instilled these sentiments in him. I am not voting for him because he fails to see the flawed judgment he exhibits in not totally repudiating Rev. Wright. His platform is for unity of all races remember. Well his defense of Wright speaks volumes.
I can't be President
Submitted on March 26th, 2008 by kevinkindMy Preacher on Easter Sunday morning brought up the subject of U.S. history -vs- Christ's resurrection by saying,
" George Washington was not the father of our country, he may have never even existed and if he did, He most surely was a communist ".
He was trying to make the point that if we knew that Washington was real than we all must also believe in Christ and the resurrection. So I guess now I'll never be able to be President.
My Preacher is a great guy when his comments are kept in context.
giving it some thought
Submitted on March 26th, 2008 by AnonymousHis speech is just that nothing more nothing less, there are many people in the United States who have been wronged in one form or another, my point is, people have the choice to change in todays day and age, the part that is difficult to understand is why they choose to live in a past which they did not personally experience;and continue to behave as if it was them it happened to. It doesn't matter which race it is, all of the people who come before us have suffered in some form or another, the lesson is if the future learns from the past. Most are so self absorbed they can not get beyond their own desires to further their own existence. We live in a day and age that allows anyone to accomplish anything they choose to, the only person holding them back is themselves, and as far as being oppressed, suppressed in our society, take a stand with your children and be parents, people learn bias and hate from their families and parents, if a person truly wants change then it begins at home, it is about respecting each others as human beings not as a black man, or hispanic or Asian or Native American, but as a person with a bit of self respect for others and your family. The reverend intentionally made his statements and clearly understood what he is saying on national televisions, is was about sensationalism and a day of fame. He is selfish for not thinking of what it would to Obama, clearly he stole the spotlight and put a black spot on Obama. Sad !
A Wayoff Analogy
Submitted on March 26th, 2008 by AnonymousRev. Wright is trying to organize people to do harm to others as did the KKK. In America, we can speak our mind-Why can't Rev. Wright? It's okay for people to ride around with Confederate flags on their cars and nothing is said. You have a black minister from the pulpit in his church making statements that people don't want to hear and you compare him to the klan. How ludicrous!
More Perfect Union
Submitted on March 26th, 2008 by AnonymousUnfortunately, some of the things Rev. Wright said are true. There are unaddressed issues within the black community-no closure is possible for the damage done following the Civil War and the continued problems that exist in our country. Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth. Senator Obama is taking a beating for something he did not say.
Get educated
Submitted on March 26th, 2008 by AnonymousIf you really want to get educated about Senator Obama, see a collection of cold hard facts on:
http://ca4mccain.blogspot.com/
in a nutshell, friend, there is no context so ever justifying any of those "soundbites".
What do you think would have happened, if a white senator had attended just one single time the speeche of David Duke of the Ku Klux Clan.....
So - why is Obama still a candidate?
I DID
Submitted on March 26th, 2008 by AnonymousWhile I certainly do not want to dismiss the "plight of the Blacks", it is a sentiment stuck in the 60s.
Yes, many blacks still clamor about racism in America and share Rev Wrights point of view. Does that make it right for anyo9ne to fire such sentiments up even further?
Soundbites or not, these statements have been made - period!
Not once, but over the course of decades. My friend - there is no context at all justifying these "soundbites". Not only were they inflammatory and divisive, they were blatant distortions of historical facts (Aids). There is no excuse or mitigating circumstances for a public figure to spill such hate and nurture the underlying sentiment.
Just turn the thing around for a second and assume, a white Senator had attended the speeches of David Duke of the Ku Klux Clan. Just once.
Do you honestlythink that this white senator would still be a candidate today?
Obama hmself called for the immediate firing of Imus after racial comments. One tiime only and he fell into the trap of Reverse Racism.
Now that a member of his support staff is concerned, a different set of rules apply? It's a joke, it is against American Principles and it is hippocritical.
