What Got Lost in the Wright Story

Many Americans were understandably upset to see the clip of Rev. Wright seeming to put blame on the US for the Sept. 11 attacks. "America's chickens are coming home to roost," said he.

Since I haven't seen the full sermon, I don't want to comment further on Wright's point of view, but I'll say this:

It is possible to argue that America's policies did contribute to the attacks and the continuing desires of some Muslims to hurt us without excusing them.

It is possible as an American to criticize our government and still be patriotic and love our country. I'd say that such criticism can be evidence of that patriotism and love.

We are the country that supported Saddam Hussein and provided him with weaponry. And we knew what he was. But it served our desire at the time to hold Iran at bay. I'm not saying I agree that was a good idea, but ain't it ironic.

Our staunch support for Israel is another factor. This is another case, where, although I strongly support Israel's right and need to exist, I am critical of their actions. But giving them full support and being uncritical, our government has contributed to the view the Islamic world has of us.

These are just a couple of examples, neither of which means I am weak in support of my country or the fight to stop terrorism. Nor do I forgive those who have or would attack us in any respect.

But if we can't take a pragmatic view of events and admit that some actions result in certain reactions -- whether justified or not -- and consider that when we establish policies or consider going to war, we are bound to be in this muddle for generations to come.
