Bill Clinton didn't invade Iraq

Ralph Peters makes the case today that invading Iraq was a good idea that was badly bungled by the Bush Administration. So far so good -- reasonable people can disagree about that. But then he gets silly:

Had President Bill Clinton sent our troops to depose Saddam Hussein, Democrats would have celebrated him as the greatest liberator since Abraham Lincoln.

Well, sure. And had he sent our forces to conquer Mars, he would've been celebrated as the greatest galactic conqueror since Darth Vader. But in the real world, neither of those things happened.

Clinton, in fact, fought a war of liberation, remember? Kosovo. And it was notable for two things:

* His refusal to use ground troops to invade and occupy Kosovo, instead relying on air power to beat back Serbia. He was heavily criticized in some quarters for that decision -- but as it happens, we're not bogged down militarily in Kosovo today.

* Opposition from some -- but not all -- Democrats for going to war at all.

Peters imagines a world that doesn't exist to produce a result that wouldn't happen. But that's the only way he can make sure that Democrats get some blame for the failures of Iraq.
