What Rev. Wright Has to Teach Us About America
Posted 29 weeks 4 days ago byAs anyone who has a television has no doubt heard, Senator Obama's head pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, gave a barn-burner of a sermon recently. So much so that it included the words, "God Damn America" not once, but repeatedly. Now the video I posted here doesn't include those words, because I don't support that kind of speech and never will. If there is a Creator, I want nothing but His blessings on my home! But this video is an example (taken from Fox News) of more of the sermon that people are calling racist, bigoted, hate speech.
I have to admit, I just don't get it. Wright is obviously schilling for Obama, but since he's not telling anyone who to vote for, I doubt there's even a concrete argument for his church losing their tax-exempt status. Beyond that, all Wright says is that the country is run by rich, White, prosperous people - and that Hillary Clinton has never faced the type of adversity that almost every African American still faces simply because of the color of his/her skin. I don't know if I agree with that last, because I think Hillary's gender has been an obstacle for her, albeit different. But what exactly am I supposed to be upset about here? I've met racists in my hometown. I've sat down to dinner with lawmakers who continually face discrimination on their statehouse floor. I've even seen classmates passed over simply because no one ever thinks a Black student can be a leader. What's wrong with pointing out that this country still has a race problem? Was it prudent, as a campaign figure - probably not. But again, I just don't see what the fuss is all about.
There's a lot in there about Jesus having been in the same position Barack is, since he, too, was a Black man oppressed by the White Romans. I'm not sure modern-day theologians would agree that Jesus was Black (he was most likely olive-skinned), but he was a minority in his environment, oppressed by the traditional majority, so there's at least some logic to the whole "underdog" storyline. I don't think Barack needs it - he's never had to rely on a pity vote before - and it isn't entirely flattering to his candidacy. And maybe i'm just an overly secure middle-class White person, but I'm not offended by anything here.
After having an argument with a good friend tonight, I went back and reviewed Rev. Wright's comments again. My friend had accused me of being okay with racism as long as it attacked White men, and I was disturbed enough by that accusation to go back and check my first opinions. I still don't see it though.
So here's your chance. Go to the video, and with the exception of the aforementioned "God Damn America" bit (which was as close to blasphemy as our civil religion can get, and shouldn't have been said), quote to me the part of this sermon that offends you. Then tell me why. I have no problem with people having an opinion different from mine, but I'd like to understand it. And so far, other than calling the whole thing a big racist statement, no one I've talked to has been able to articulate just what about this sermon they don't like. Please, enlighten me.

Okay, I give up ...
Submitted on April 16th, 2008 by John 2000maybe you do get:
* that American government created the Aids virus to infect blacks in Africa
* that this is the KKK of USA
* that 9/11 was the chickens coming home to roost
* that the bombings that finally ended WWII equate to terrorism
* that GD America is appropriate 'church' language
* that the 10,000 square foot mansion with 10 million credit line in a white neighborhood is consistent with his hate mongering.
then so be it. God bless you. You really do get it.
Again, and again, and again
Submitted on April 15th, 2008 by KansasGirlTell me what offends you. You can tell me I "don't get it" all day long, but I'm convinced you don't get it either, because you can't tell me what offends you. No one has been able to say, "this is what he said, and this is why I don't like it."
It is not surprising
Submitted on April 15th, 2008 by John 2000that you don't get it, but I find it still disturbing that you don't. I don't expect you ever will.
It seems to me that your favorite, The Most Reverend Wright' abuses the pulpit to promulgate the bitterness that your Mr Obama sees as the reason that typical rural white America clings to religion.
wow ... I don't expect you ever will.
but he did
Submitted on March 19th, 2008 by sunshine308well I did listen to his speech.. his smoke screen.. he sounded sincere but I can tell you that there are millions of white and black Americans and millions of Christians that will never forget that image of Wright and his circus that appeared before us that was the most outrageous and disgusting performance of our lifetimes and not only that he can never ever never excuse a relationship for over 20 years with this jackass and try to pretend he didnt know his philosophy and disposition about America and Jews and Whites etc..etc.. his goose is cooked.. his electibility is gone.. the superdelegates also know this so you know the consequence.. he should now drop out of the race and save himself and the democratic party some face.
Having checked it out...
Submitted on March 18th, 2008 by Anonymous...I think this whole thing is being overblown. We are not that many years removed from segregation being the written law of the land, and the oppression of non-white folx still occurs. And, I do think the USA courted 9-1-1 in some ways, as our leaders, industry and military used other countries as their chessboard, so I frankly am not put off by that comment either.
Rev. Wright may be a bit over the top, but you have to hand it to him for speaking truth to power.
Re: But he did
Submitted on March 18th, 2008 by KansasGirla) Wright did not tell anyone who to vote for, although he did compare Obama to Jesus. That was a little much, I think, but there was nothing inherently wrong with it. I really don't think Jesus is worrying about it, do you?
b) This is yet another example of what I find so odd about the whole business - someone who condemns the whole episode, but refuses to give me a quote and tell me why it offends them*.
* With the exception of "God Damn America," because I think we all agree that shouldn't have been said.
As for Obama's electibility - I hope you listened to his speech today. I think he's more electable than ever. This was an insanely tough issue to meet with grace, humility, and wisdom - and he has.
but he did
Submitted on March 18th, 2008 by sunshine308tell his congregation to vote for the black jesus, Obama..and if you were not offended by wright's ugly words then you have something very wrong with your ability to hear or your conscience or both.
ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ABOUT WHAT HE SAYS IS OFFENSIVE.. IT IS HATE MONGERING, BIGOTRY, RACIST, ANTI AMERICAN AND BLASPHEMOUS.. ..the words he spoke I believe will never go away as the repulsivness and disgust that they invoked were pretty near to what I would call "puking sickening".. so now that all the world has seen who Obama used for a mentor for 20 years ..his electibility I would say has dropped to about zero.
