Obama: Building a religion ("Cake" video)
Posted 2 years 1 week ago byYou may have seen the latest video that the brilliant will.i.am produced for his messiah, Barack Obama. If you haven't, you should. It's great for laughs -- that is, if you're not even more disturbed by the fact that the crappy music impressario has managed to top himself in creepy false idol worship -- something I had once considered a difficult trick. But your observations of this year's political dynamic are not complete unless you listen to Jessica Alba stammer through an endorsement of her man, and observe a mysterious "celebrity" declare he supports Obama because he wants to "end fear."
The chants of "Obama! Obama! Obama!" which drive the beat give the ad a "Riefenstahl-meets-Gap-ad aesthetic," in the words of The Corner's Mark Hemmingway. Creeeep-eee. Especially since it has brought people to tears.
Yet, the wonders of YouTube allow almost immediate counter-videos to be produced. The one above sets the Obama phenomenon to the one song to which it really applies: "Building A Religion," by Cake. (I love that band, and should have thought of that song long ago....drat!)

What is that they say?
Submitted on March 8th, 2008 by Jim LakelyImitation is the sincerest form of flattery? Sure. But mockery isn't. I'd call Force of Will.i.am's contribution a piece of work, all right -- in the way my crusty old man uses the phrase.
There are plenty of inspirational videos about McCain's service record. Here's an exceptional one.
I'd have a smidgen more respect for this phenomenon of celebrity involvement in politics if they had half a clue about politics or policy in this country. Until then, I'll continue pointing and laughing, thank you.
Mr. "Vote or Die" P. Diddy didn't even vote himself, neither did the original "Obama girl" YouTube star. And for that, at least, I'm thankful. May the trend of mindless poseurs not voting continue.
You know what they say. . .

And, while simultaneously deriding his efforts, you post a video designed to -not inspire- but tear down someone as a false idol? If you're going to protest, post an inspirational video about McCain's service record, or his efforts to do whatever. At the most basic level, you're just continuing a spiral of 'negative advertising with no substance,' which is just as bad or worse than the 'positive advertising without substance' in the "Yes We Can" video. There's an intellectual case to be made here, but it's much more fun to laugh at people who are involved in Democracy. Give me a break.
The great thing about Cake
Submitted on March 7th, 2008 by JoelThey play their music at a reasonable audio level. No earplugs needed.
Yes, Cake rules
Submitted on March 7th, 2008 by Jim LakelyI'm jealous of you ability to see that band "too many times to count." I've never seen them, but should be able to since I live in SoCal now.
And don't mock the Members Only threads, man. That was dope back in Obama's smokin' years. Besides, the brand is making a comeback.
Cake Rules.

That's a classic Member's Only jacket he's sporting - very Hasslehoffian.
