Do we want a Reagan " Foot soldier" as Commander in Chief?
Posted 26 weeks 4 days ago byNobody can contest that Senator Mc Cain is an honorable man.
However, his claim to have been a Reagan "Foot Soldier" could be more harmfull than beneficial for his campain.
In my humble opinion, there is a great deal of mythology as far as the " accomplishments" of Reagan in the field of international policies. He is wrongly credited to have " Won the Cold War", mainly because of his famous one liner: " Mister Gorbachev, tear down this wall". As matter of fact, the Soviet Empire was crumbling on it's own (for economical reasons).Gorbachev never got full credit for his courrage of giving up control of the Soviet apparatus.
My main bone of contention with pundits crediting Reagan foreign policy is with the geopolitical long term blunder of Afghanistan. The Reagan's " Freedom Fighters" were generously financed and armed by the CIA. The " Freedom Fighters" of yesterday are today Talibans and terrorists. That,to me, show an extreme short view of geopolitics.
One could argue that the last Republican President with a good long term Foreign Policy was....Richard Nixon. He managed to get the US out of Vietnam and to open diplomatic talks with China.
If Mc Cain get elected, he will hopefully not follow the three diplomatic golden rules of the current Administration:
1- Do not talk to your enemies
2- Have poor judgement in picking " New Friends" ( Musharaff)
3-Never listen to your real friends ( such as " Old Europe")
It is time to get back in the field of Foreign Affairs people as sharp as Kissinger & Allbright instead of the clueless Secretary Rice.

Not so fast Senator Mc Cain...
Submitted on March 18th, 2008 by Anonymousit seems that Mc Cain is abroad ( Iraq, Israel, Europe) doing what appear to be a premature victory lap.
Not so fast Senator Mc Cain, it is not over yet......
He should make sure to stay away from the " lame duck " VP as well. Dick is out and about, let see what type of other big problems ( a plan to attack Iran?) he can generate in the region.
Great blog...even so I am no Nixon or Kissinger fan.

Dems are way different....
Submitted on March 12th, 2008 by AnonymousHaving Mc Cain in the White House would be a nightmare. It would translate into war, war and more war. I don't want a Reagan foot soldier or a W light for that matter. I am fine with either Clinton or Obama.
Democrats are not much different
Submitted on March 6th, 2008 by AnonymousAll the talk about how it is time for a "change" is just more politics as usual. I am not a Mc Cain supporter, but may vote for him in the general. Hilary may be the best when it comes to foreign policy, but the media is doing it's best to convince the simplton in this country to not vote for her. Why bother to make your own informed decisions, when you can just do what Chris Matthews tells you, and move on to watching American Idol. Obama gives a good speech when it is put in front of him and not much else. Obama and Hilary both scare me with their pushing more and more social programs down our throat squeezing the middle class even more. Obama says we need to get out of countries that we don't belong in. If he really meant it, why doesn't he start in Israel? That would begin to stop the hatred of America in the Middle East. If he was really about change, why didn't he run as a third party candidate?
Nixon redux
Submitted on March 6th, 2008 by AnonymousI am a fan of Nixon ( I can't even mention it with my GOP friends). It is quite unusual for what appear to be a very liberal point of view ( the anti Reagan rhetoric) to actually read that you have good things to say about Nixon....very surprising indeed.
Thanks.
