McCain should thank the New York Times
Posted 45 weeks 4 days ago byBad press can make for excellent fund raising. Thursday's New York Times belated expose of John McCain's relationship with a telecom-industry lobbyist has only helped McCain solidify support... and rake in the bucks. A New York Daily News story reports McCain is using the Times' apparent hit job in his appeals to donors.
The Times' self-immolation is a glory to behold. Incredibly, editor Bill Keller says he wasstunned and surprised at the overwhelmingly negative public reaction to the story. "I was surprised by how lopsided the opinion was against our decision, with readers who described themselves as independents and Democrats joining Republicans in defending Mr. McCain from what they saw as a cheap shot."
Why so shocked? Is Keller really so naive? McCain is the presumptive GOP front-runner in what is shaping up to be a tough election year. He has thousands of people campaigning actively on his behalf. And despite a pretentious claim to be America's Newspaper of Record, the Times has a reputation for partisan journalism. Had the story been better sourced, Keller might have reason to complain. But the reporting was weak and the story was lame. It's no conspiracy. It's plain stupidity.
McCain on Thursday said he was "disappointed" with the Times. Sure he was. But privately he's got to be dancing a jig at how much the Times' misbegotten smear attempt has boosted his campaign -- far more than 100 or even 1,000 endorsement editorials ever could.

Best Quotation About Conservatives and The New York Times

Yep. That's about right.
No, YOU'RE too kind
Submitted on February 24th, 2008 by Jim LakelyFunny you bring this up. The guys over at PowerLine today liked to a Wall Street Journal editorial that talks about how the McCain campaign's own activities in the last few months have put The Maverick into an absurd pickle -- thanks to the law he wrote.
The money quote:
Yeah. Try to make sense of that. Good work, Sen. McCain.
In-kind or too kind?

I thought about the in-kind angle, which is just perverse enough to generate an FEC complaint. But I doubt it would come from the McCain camp. What are Obama's lawyers doing this weekend, I wonder? But if not a campaign, why doesn't some enterprising lawyer try to work around McCain-Feingold's press exception? That line of attack would all but guarantee a media crusade to kill the law.
RE: McCain should thank the New York Times
Submitted on February 24th, 2008 by Jim LakelyI agree, Ben, that Keller's justification for running the story -- not to mention his shock at the negative reaction -- has now become bigger than the story itself. Which is hard to do, but The New York Times was up to the job. Keller emerged from his office to speak to his "public" on Friday, and his reasoning revealed a lot.
As I noted in one of my Friday blog posts:
Yeah. Right. I've always thought that conservatives would eventually get behind McCain. The New York Times has only accelerated the process. McCain ought to be getting his lawyers on the case. No. I'm not talking libel. Keller might very well have contributed an "in kind" contribution to a campaign that runs afoul of McCain-Feingold.
