Stump the legislator: Barack Obama edition
Posted 46 weeks 16 hours ago bySo, what has Barack Obama done to earn Americans' votes? What are his legislative accomplishments? Good question. By way of Commentary's terrific Contentions blog comes this painful exchange between Chris Matthews and Obama supporter Kirk Watson, a Democratic state senator from Texas:
Matthews: Sir, you have to give me his accomplishments. You supported him for president. You’re on national television. Name his legislative accomplishments, Barack Obama, sir.
Watson: Well, I’m not going to be able to name you specific items of legislative accomplishment.
Matthews: Can you name any? Can you name anything that he’s accomplishment as a senator?
Watson: No, I’m not going to be able to do that tonight.
Matthews: Well, that’s a problem isn’t it?
I'll say it again: Hope and change are not a political platform.

Cotton Candy Change

Just how gullible are the people of the U.S. of America?
You get what you vote for. Change comes with the rising of the sun. A nation inspired is not a nation transpired without a vast resevoir of fundamental wisdom and experience for inciting true accomplishment. Barack Obama promises to build a bridge to the future, but consistently reaches into the annals of the past for mortar long expired. If it's inspiration you want, tune in to Billy Graham or Richard Simmons. If you want to perpetuate real change that directly affects you and your family, don't throw your vote away on cotton candy wishes.
A Big Campaign
Submitted on February 21st, 2008 by KansasGirlThis is what happens when your campaign is so large and spread out, not everybody has the talking points. . . sigh. We can't be polished ALL the time! And just because she froze on TV doesn't mean Obama doesn't have legislative accomplishments. It just means his erstwhile spokesperson froze on TV.
I agree with Joel, there's a discussion to be had about what Obama has done. It also bears recognition that the system prevents someone so young from having a huge record of accomplishments, especially in the Senate. I wish you could talk to a field rep, though. Not only have they been given the talking points, most of them can go five rounds with you on policy. There is depth here, there is content and context - go read the website. It just didn't come out in this clip.

Well, yes. And I think that record would strike many people as rather thin if it's the best a Obamaniac can come up with. Heck, the list is so short, why can't his supporters commit them to memory?
Maybe because (1) droning on about "Nunn-Lugar" will put people to sleep and people tend to have little faith that wonkish pieces of paper foster peace, (2) many of he "various bills concerning the response to Hurricane Katrina" amounted to little more than political grandstanding (the problem of Katrina evacuation was on the local level, not with the feds who told Blanco/Nagin to get those people out), and (3) singling out a single ethics bill just doesn't sound all that impressive.
Nice try, though. Obama knows he won't be elected for his record, but in spite of it. So why bother interrupting the chorus of hosannahs to talk about it.
Watson explains himself
Submitted on February 20th, 2008 by BenIn fairness to the man, sitting there under the hot studio lights, listening to Chris Matthews (for crying out loud!) here's Kirk Watson's morning-after statement. "(M)y mind went blank. I expected to be asked about the primary that night, or the big one coming up in Texas on March 4, or just about anything else in the news. When the subject changed so emphatically, I reached for information that millions of my fellow Obama supporters could recite by heart, and I couldn’t summon it."
OBAMAS RECORD
Submitted on February 20th, 2008 by sunshine308Well I first of all I must take you to task for mentioning "ethics" and Obama in the same sentence.. what audacity !!! .. Obama is a proven liar, who consorts with criminals, takes money from them, flip flops on votes, votes present on issues so he wont have to take a stand, (politically convenient tho!!)..votes against things he should vote for..like the schools to have money to put equipment on computers in school so kids cant access sexually explicit material.. and he votes for things he should vote against.. like denying sexual predators "good time".. (maybe he thinks they should be rewarded??)..He changes his mind after he votes so obviously he doesnt know his own mind.. what kind of quality is that to comittment on an issue??, and I could go on..so please dont talk about Obama and ethics.. together.. it's obscene!!.
Now we also have allegation that he was involved in crack cocaine deals (which he admitted earlier but made it sound like it was when he was a teenager) in recent years and gay sex?? These things need to be looked into to determine if there is any validity to them but again it has colored the water for many when it comes to his character and honesty and good judgment. I will reserve judgment til then on this issue but I have already made up my mind that he has NO PRESIDENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS.

Obama's record

Now obviously, there's a discussion to be had whether these were significant or worthy accomplishments. But it's not as though he's spent his time in the Senate twiddling his thumbs.
hope and change??
Submitted on February 20th, 2008 by Anonymoushope and change are things we all want..in all parties..all genders, all colors.. it's not original and despite what some people must think, Obama does not have license on these two words!!! A platform is to let people know what you stand for.. what policies, what kind of attitudes you possess about issues that are important of the day.. it is something that Obama has yet to provide to us.. especially all these blinded sheep that follow.. like the rats followed the Pied Piper..he will even get them it seems to take the cool-aid soon. How gullible the population is when they are hungry.. dumb and dumber.. voting without regard for obligation to duty, without informing themselves. What ever happened here that allowed millions of people to throw caution, past experience and intelligence out the window in one swoop. You talk about "unprecendented grace".. but I think I would call it unprecendented "wolf in sheeps clothing" who has truly fooled the people.. Think about it.. this guy is a proven liar, consorts with criminals, takes illegal money, flip flops on issues and shows he has no leadership qualities by voting present on many votes..politically convenient it was however..when he had a chance to vote for items that would be in the best interest of children he voted against them.. but voted positively on the other hand for "sexual predators".. (like they should be rewarded??)..He chose to change his vote many times only minutes after making it.. (real comittment to the issue , right?), he chooses rhetoric rather than substance because he has none..he's too inexperienced to offer substance..he has no business running for this job and there should be a resume required for this job so that the house can vote on just who can run for this office by qualifications (nothing to do with race, gender, color or religion) as for Michelle Obama.. she needs to go to charm school and after her declaration yesterday that she has never had any pride in America she should go hide her head someplace.. but never allowed to set foot in our whitehouse. Americans need to wake up and smell the roses.. there are capable people out there that can tackle the job at hand ..it just isn't Obama.

Family Values
Submitted on February 20th, 2008 by dotsHope and change are not a political platform? What is a political platform these days? Obama has mastered the horse race we have constructed for our presidential candidates with unprecedented grace. It is a rhetorical beast, and he has proven to be a rhetorical beastmaster. Nothing more, but more importantly, nothing less. If he wins the nomination and carries the national election, it will be on this quality. It's too late in the game to be calling for substance.
Anyway, I find it less tiresome to hear speeches on hope and change than the "Family Values" schtick from other campaigns in the recent past.
