Michelle Obama isn't helping

My former enthusiasm for Barack Obama's candidacy is being tempered somewhat by ... Michelle Obama.

In the last few days, there have been:

* Her suggestion that her husband can help fix our souls.

* Her statement that for the first time in her adult lifetime, she's proud of her country -- because of her husband's candidacy.

These are the kinds of statements that suggest the Obamas are starting to buy their own hype. And they contain a certain amount of messianic fervor that's unattractive in a teenager, much less a presidential candidate.

I'm not interested in having a president who thinks he or she takes orders from God. But I'm also not interested in having a president who thinks he or she is God, either.

UPDATE: I'm the kind of voter who tries to make decisions based on policy rather than personality. But Obama is running, in large part, on his personality, and if he and his camp have an outsized conception of what he can accomplish through force of will and charisma, that's subject to criticism and scrutiny.
