Ronald Reagan embraced communism
Posted 47 weeks 3 days ago bySounds ridiculous, doesn't it? But it's true. Ronald Reagan met with Mikhail Gorbechev on several occasions during his presidency -- and that's all the proof I need: Ronald Reagan embraced communism.
I mention this because of President Bush's appearance on Fox News today:
"I certainly don't know what he believes in," Bush said when asked if there had been a "rush to judgment" about Obama. "The only foreign policy thing I remember he said was he's going to attack Pakistan and embrace Ahmadinejad."
Riiiiiight. Here's what Obama actually said during the CNN YouTube debate:
QUESTION: Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?
OBAMA: I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them -- which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration -- is ridiculous.
Now, Ronald Reagan and Democratic presidents like JFK constantly spoke to Soviet Union at a time when Ronald Reagan called them an evil empire. And the reason is because they understood that we may not trust them and they may pose an extraordinary danger to this country, but we had the obligation to find areas where we can potentially move forward.
Now certainly, there's a fair debate to be had over whether American leaders should have personal high-level talks with countries that are working counter to American interests. I happen to take Obama's side in that debate. But even if I didn't, for the president to characterize Obama's position as "embracing" Ahmadinejad is, at best, mendacious.

umm, did i miss something??
Submitted on February 11th, 2008 by abobumm, did i miss something?? Re-read this and tell me where Joel questioned "one of our greatest leaders" He didn't. You're hearing what you want to hear. Joel said that by Bush's comment that Obama embraces Iran's leader, Bush would have to have said the same about Reagan. How can one praise Reagan for talking with an "Evil Empire" and then put Obama down for wanting to do the same? Looks like Bush only hears what he wants to. And yes - I would prefer Slick Willy over Slick and Stupid any election day.

Good line from Bush
Submitted on February 10th, 2008 by Another skepticI've always liked President Bush's quips and sense of humor.
The fact is that Obama and Clinton have waved the white flag of surrender, otherwise known as "the last resort."
So, if Obama or Clinton becomes president and engages our enemies, the enemies will have the advantage of knowing that Obama/Clinton have promised the American people that they will surrender.
This means the agenda of talks with Iran, Chavez, Putin and China will be the terms of surrender.
The world and Congress will roll the naive and inexperienced Obama. Congress may not roll Clinton, but the world will.
If that doesn't scare you, nothing will.
Wasn't Bush referring to
Submitted on February 10th, 2008 by AnonymousWasn't Bush referring to Obama's August 1st foreign policy address, not the CNN debate? Perhaps you should take the quotes from that speech?

Submitted on February 10th, 2008 by BenGreat headline, Joel. For a brief moment, I thought I was going to have to parachute from my flight from Washington over the midwest and give you a ... er, stern talking to.
I suspect that speaking with Iran would be OK, but I don't think it could be done without preconditions. Yes, of course, the United States has dealt with its enemies in the past. But you know as well as I do that these things don't happen by simply picking up the phone. I think Obama knows it, too.
I had a very good talk this week with a conservo-libertarian friend of mine who is extremely savvy on foreign affairs. He believes that Iran is willing to make a deal with the United States. In fact, you may recall, the Iranians made overtures in 2003 -- after the initial military success in Iraq -- that the United States rejected. The question is, what would such a deal look like? And how would it reshape the security of the Middle East. My guess is only the Saudis know for sure.
What do you expect, it's Fox News?
