Angelina Jolie is in Iraq
Posted 40 weeks 5 days ago byI have to admit: My first reaction to this bit of news is pure sarcasm:
UN goodwill ambassador and Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie visited Iraq on a humanitarian mission on Thursday and met top officials to demand help for people displaced by the war.
Our obsession with celebrities does take attention off other worthy matters, to be sure. And I have no doubt of Jolie's smarts and good intentions here. But Iraq is actually one situation that doesn't need a celebrity's attentions to bring to the sportlight, isn't it?

There really aren't enough stories about the daily lives of people in Iraq after we invaded. Its one place I feel like the Bush admin still has power over the media. They get to talk about how kids can go to school now!! They leave out that they only get to go if they can make it past the people who are trying to kill them. Women in the country feel like its more conservative than before. People who have been run out of their homes are increasingly annoyed by the fact that their homes (if they are still even there) are inaccessible ...
All we really hear about are the American troops... know what I mean? we forget that there is a whole people over there outside the ambassadors, country leaders, the parliament, generals, etc...
No Angelina Jolie photo
Submitted on February 7th, 2008 by JoelI admit. I thought about putting an Angelina Jolie photo with this blog. But that would make me part of the problem, wouldn't it?
