Democrat...Republic...what's the difference!?

I am very new to politics, and so do not know the difference between Republicans and democrats.
If anyone would like to, please msg me or respond to this blog with un-bias info about each one.
I want to know why they are so different even tho the dictionary definition of each is practically the same..
