So, John Edwards promised (2 days before the Iowa caucus that was thought to be a must-win for him) to get all U.S. troops out of Iraq in 10 months (no one else has promised any better than one year!). Link below.

This is so flagrantly irresponsible - even if you want out of Iraq ASAP, no reasonable person can believe that the best way to do it is rip everyone out immediately, damn the torpedoes, faster than logistically feasible as estimated by the DoD and military commanders. What, John Edwards is going to walk into the White House and make them do it? I'd love to listen to that meeting if it wouldn't be so tragic.

2 days out from the Iowa caucus, it's like the Dems are in a price war (12 months! no 10 months!), racing to the bottom in more ways than one. Wasn't JFK in the Democratic party? Truman? Hell, even Lyndon Johnson. What the hell happened to that wing of the party? Can you imagine JFK saying "I promise I will deliver the fastest retreat"??

In the interview on Sunday, Mr. Edwards said that he decided on his current plan for a rapid and near-total withdrawal of American troops because of the failure of Iraqi leaders to achieve a political accommodation over the past four years. Eight to 10 brigades, which is likely to be the bulk of the American combat force by the time the next president takes office, would immediately be withdrawn.

"I absolutely believe this to my soul: we are there propping up their bad behavior," he said. "I mean really, how many American lives and how much American taxpayer money are we going to continue to expend waiting for these political leaders to do something? Because that is precisely what we are doing."

Anytime a politician says "I absolutely believe this to my soul" it's because, like a televangelist, he's overcompensating for the fact that people tend to think he's full of sh*t. I swear, if there's been a snakier politician than John Edwards in U.S. history, I can't think of him offhand. How spineless do you have to be to impossibly promise the fastest retreat from a war you voted for just 5 years ago when you wanted to be a centrist? Edwards is a gutless weasel. He makes Bill Clinton look like Andy Griffith.
