Huckabee wins Iowa

I wrote this on my old blog in 2005:

You might not have heard of Huckabee, but he’s a politician to pay attention to as 2008 approaches. He shares Brownback’s “culture of life” agenda, but he’s perhaps a little more polished as a speaker.

A former Baptist preacher, he deftly wove political jokes and heartrending stories through his stump speech — and garnered the loudest applause of the night from Iowa Republicans when he was finished.

A lot of people are pointing to Huckabee's win as proof that evangelicals have, at long last, cemented their hold over the GOP. And that's true, to some extent. But I watched the guy give his stump speech in Iowa more than two years ago -- and I'm telling you, he was simply a great politician.

A great politician doesn't make a great president, though.
