The separation of church and state
Posted 1 year 1 week ago byYes, I'm endorsing something I found in National Review.
Although Christians are called to serve in the world, including politics, they are not sanctioned to use the political sword of the magistrate for spiritual purposes. Since Christ and politics are separate, the Christian calling is not to become a politically religious activist, but rather to serve in the public square in a God-honoring way without imposing explicit Christian principles on others.
This seems reasonable to me. Politics are an expression of values, and for many people, those values are shaped by religious faith. It's unreasonable to expect otherwise. And saying so in no way diminishes the experience of people whose values have been shaped without the influence of religion; it's also unreasonable for them to check their influences at the door.
Even if everybody agrees with the above paragraph, though -- not a given -- there's likely to be plenty of argument about the line between "God-honoring service" and "imposing Christian principles." It is, I think, a tricky line to walk.
