Walking Among the Apple Cultists
Posted 35 weeks 6 days ago byLook, I'm not going to lie to you. I'm an Apple guy all the way. I've been an Apple guy since 1984 or '85, when I was but a child. My first computer was an Apple IIc. I had two -- count 'em, two! -- floppy disc drives! When I set off for UC San Diego in the autumn of 1989, I arrived with a Macintosh SE, fully equipped with a 20 mb harddrive and one -- count 'em, one! -- megabyte of random access memory. To this day, I'm a devoted Apple customer. I have two Macs and two iPods. I guess that makes me a tepid Apple fan.
But the hardcore Mac people, they creep me out.
Case in point, via The New York Times: The Apple Stores are havens for Mac cultists. Now, I know something about the Mac cult. They're fine people, without a doubt. But I would remind them of Aristotle's advice about moderation.

A few years ago, at a national gathering of Mennonites...

One was a plea for Mennonites to use Macs instead of PCs, as a means of going against the grain. I forget the precise religious justification for it, but it was proof that the cult knows no bounds.
