A Libertarian Argument Against Bottled Water
Posted 34 weeks 4 days ago byI basically have no love lost for bottled water. I think it's a lot of hooey that bottled water. Fortunately Penn and Teller of Bullsh-t! agree with me.
The whole video is worth watching. We basically pay for bottled water with our taxes and then the companies resell it to us at a price higher than gasoline. Good grief!

White guilt redux
Posted 34 weeks 4 days ago byA reader sends a private message about my blog on "white guilt." I share it in its entirety, along with some of my own thoughts:
I don't praise white guilt at all. As a matter of fact, I don't feel guilty what so ever. First of all, there is no one left alive that had anything to do with black slavery.
Passport data breach: Should Secretary Rice resign?
Posted 34 weeks 4 days ago byToday,we found out that the State Department had a security breach on the passport files of the three remaining candidates for the Presidential Elections.
Senator Obama's file was accessed three times ( In January, February and then again in March). The State Dep. subcontracted the data mining work to Stanley ( a company based in West Virginia). Apparantly, Stanley had their contract extended for another 5 years recently.

Is Rush Limbaugh in legal trouble again?
Posted 34 weeks 5 days ago byUh oh. The Associated Press reports: "Cuyahoga County Board of Elections is investigating whether any Republicans broke the law when they switched parties in the March 4 presidential primary to back the candidate that they perceived to be a weaker opponent for GOP nominee-in-waiting John McCain."
In praise of white guilt
Posted 34 weeks 5 days ago byI come here to praise white guilt.
White guilt -- over the sins of slavery and Jim Crow in this country -- does not have the best reputation. Among conservatives, the phrase is used sneeringly; among liberals, it's often used with self-knowing irony. Which is too bad, because I believe that white guilt is actually quite useful.
I've made this argument before, but in the wake of Barack Obama's big speech, it's worth bringing up again.
Toilets
Posted 34 weeks 5 days ago byI'd spent a few years covering City Hall -- and all its mundane-but-critical services, such as trash collection, that it provides -- when I went to New York for the first time. Which is why the first thought I had, as all the skyscrapers came into view, was this:
"That's a lot of plumbing."
Army captains: Voting with their feet
Posted 34 weeks 5 days ago byThe New York Times reports this morning about how the Army's captains -- the linchpins of the war effort -- are getting out in droves:
“I have served my time; I’ve done two tours in Iraq,” said Capt. Kirkner Bailey, 26, of the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment in Mosul.
Bear Stearn's Bailout
Posted 34 weeks 5 days ago bySaving the banking system protects the nation. The Bear Stearns debacle could have spiraled into a crisis which would negatively impact the nation and have world wide implications. Whether Washington regulators were lax or not remains to be seen but the implications of having the fifth largest investment bank fail would have been devastating to economic markets everywhere.
